In recent years, social networking sites have become an important tool for people’s self-representation and communication interactions(Fox & Rooney,2015).People frequently browse selfies on social networking sites and compare themselves with others intentionally or unintentionally, which can lead to appearance anxiety and impair the development of individual physical and mental health. As is shown in a survey that the current level of appearance anxiety among female college students in China is increasing,so it is especially important to help female college students reduce appearance anxiety and improve their mental health.Research shows that social comparison can bring negative emotions such as anxiety and dissatisfaction, while self-compassion can play a buffering role for negative emotions. At present, there are relatively few studies on appearance anxiety,self-viewing,upward social comparison and self-compassion.Therefore,this study was conducted to explore the relationship between self-viewing and appearance anxiety, and to investigate the possible mediating role of upward social comparison and the possible moderation role of self-compassion.Based on the findings,we designed an intervention program to help female college students with high levels of self-viewing and social appearance anxiety to reduce appearance anxiety and improve their mental health. In Study 1,555 female college students were enrolled as subjects.Questionnaires were used to explore the relationship between self-viewing,upward social comparison,self-compassion and appearance anxiety, and to verify the mediating role of upward social comparison and the moderating role of self-compassion.The results are as follows:(1)There is a significant positive correlation between self-viewing and appearance anxiety of female college students;(2)upward social comparison partially mediated the effect of self-viewing on appearance anxiety;(3)self-compassion moderated the effect of upward social comparison on appearance anxiety. In study 2,28 female college students with high self-viewing and high appearance anxiety from study 1 were selected as subjects. They were divided into intervention group(13 people,2 people lost)and control group(15 people). The intervention group is designed for once a week,2 hours a time, and 6 times in total according to the dimensions of self-compassion(self-friendliness,universal humanity and mindfulness). The results showed that the level of self-compassion in the intervention group was significantly increased and appearance anxiety was significantly decreased after the end of the intervention group, compared with the control group. And the effect remained the same one month after the end of the intervention group, that is,the intervention of self-compassion group counseling on appearance anxiety can effectively reduce the appearance anxiety of female college students.
