Before the Civil War,plantations in the southern United States mainly operated under slavery. After the Civil War,although slavery was abolished, plantations still existed as agricultural units, and at this time, the management system was implemented through a sharing system. However,it was only after World War II that the southern plantations underwent fundamental changes, transforming into capitalist farms. The transformation of agriculture in the southern region from a system of divided seed plantations to a capitalist large farm system was an important part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. However, the production reduction and subsidy policies of the New Deal, regardless of their purpose or effectiveness, are not fundamental transformations of southern agriculture. The transformation of the southern part of the plantations into capitalist farms began after the end of World War II.On the one hand, after experiencing the baptism of the Great Depression,Roosevelt’s New Deal, and World War II,the management concepts of the stubborn southern plantation owners began to change. On the other hand, more importantly, the accelerated flow of labor, the use of cotton harvesters, and new agricultural chemicals have fundamentally driven the transformation of agricultural management in the southern region. In addition to the implementation of the wage labor system on farms, modern capitalist tenant farms and family farms have also emerged.Under the promotion of agricultural mechanization and modernization, the original plantations in the southern region adopted a hired labor system and enterprise management, giving them typical capitalist characteristics, and the plantations evolved into capitalist large farms. This is a qualitative leap in the development of agriculture in the southern United States,as the southern economy and society gradually integrate into the overall trajectory of capitalist development in the United States.
