In the three traditional regions of America, the South is long-time a unique one. From the perspective of economic and social development,the American South was always in a backward state. In a word, the backwardness of the South focuses on the lagging of its industry. As far as the causes of Southern industrial backwardness are concerned, the internal is the economical and political diseases within the South itself,and the external is the disadvantageous position of the South in the framework of American regions.Since World War Ⅱ, and especially in the post-war era, the industry of the South quickly grows, as the result of the injection of the federal defense spending. Only after nearly thirty years of development, the South completes industrialization. The federal defense spending does not directly support the Southern industry, but it promotes the rise of high-tech industry in the South, which further pushes the rapid development of traditional industries in the South.The post-war industrialization of the South is a skipping ultra conventional one. Under the macro background of the third industrial revolution which is characteristic of high-tech, the South not only has speedily realized industrialization, but also walks in the forefront of industrial development in America as well as the World.The post-war industrialization of the South can provide reference for the industrialization of the central and western regions of China. The industrialization of China’s central and western regions, should take a new-type one, and realize their industrialization through a skipping extraordinary road, and develop sustainably.Besides the introduction and conclusion, the main body of this thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 explores the backwardness and causes of Southern industry before World War Ⅱ. Chapter 2 deals with the post-war rapid industrialization of American South. Chapter 3 copes with the transformation of Southern industry. Chapter 4 reveals the significance of Southern industrialization for our country.
