Lee Teogye was a famous neo-confucianist during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. He took Chu Hsi as the master of knowledge, when the school of Chu Hsi declined in the mid-Ming Dynasty of China,he continued to develop it in Korea and put forward to the view of temperament and emotion that is "four beginnings" and "seven emotions" as "Li-Qi dualism ".His temperament view integrated ontology, cosmology, human nature, mind and cultivation which has a relatively complete moral philosophy system, providing us with multiple dimensions to deepen the understanding of Chu Hsi study.Due to Chu Hsi’s theory of temperament and emotion, which did not resolve the contradiction between the body and function of "why good natures emit evil emotions",in the Korean "debate on the four beginnings and seven emotions",Teogye distinguished the source of this through multiple debates with Qi Gaofeng, explaining that the relationship between this is actually "Li-Qi dualism." Secondly,"mind"," human nature",and "emotion" these conception were given deeper discussion, especially on the " moral mind " and "human mind" to define the "four beginnings" and "seven emotions".He believes that "four beginnings " are pure and good, while the "seven emotions" are uncertain about good and evil. Finally,Teogye’s view of temperament is related to self-awareness,mainly reflecting mind is the land of Li,self-awareness require the cultivation of Li and reflection,as well as the understanding of Li by reading.Only when the self-awareness got the highest level, can the emotion become kind-hearted.Lee Teogye’s thinking on temperament had profound impact on East Asian Confucianism,Japanese scholars Seika Fujiwara,Hayasirazan,Yamazaki Ansai developed the school of Japanese Chu Hsi because of the impact of Teogye.
