In the context of the “Belt and Road” initiative and the growing China-ASEAN relations,China is paying more and more attention to friendship with neighboring countries,of which Laos is an important representative.Since the beginning of the 21 st century,China-Laos trade relations have grown tremendously, and bilateral infrastructure cooperation projects are in full swing. As the crystallization of a nation’s culture and wisdom, literature and art play a unique role in promoting humanistic exchanges between the two countries. However,Chinese research materials about Lao literature and art are still relatively scarce. Therefore,by translating texts on such topics, the rich and colorful folk culture of Laos can be disseminated to Chinese readers, thus attracting more Chinese tourists to visit Laos for exchanges and enhancing Sino-Laos friendship. To this end,the translator chose chapters 4 and 5 of Culture and Customs of Laos as the source texts, and wrote the report based on the whole translation practice. In describing the process of translation, the translator divided the whole translation process into three parts: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation revision. In the pre-translation stage, the translator first set a timetable for the translation task, and then preliminarily determined the language style and the translation methods to be adopted, such as literal translation, liberal translation or amplification, through the analysis of the type, purpose and language characteristics of the text to ensure that the translation is easy to understand and fluent. The while-translation stage focused on the various difficulties encountered in the translation process and the corresponding solutions. The post-translation stage focused on the revision of the translation. In the case study, this report demonstrates the applicability of the three principles of Skopos theory to translate information texts about Lao’s literature and art, providing a vivid and rich reference for general readers who are interested in Lao literature and arts but have little knowledge of them.According to the Skopos rule, the translator mainly adopted liberal translation and use various translation skills including omission to make the target text more accessible and reader-friendly.The coherence rule is applied to the translation process by adopting several translation techniques such as reorganization and splitting,so as to ensure the readability of the target text. The fidelity rule is used to ensure the translation is faithful to the original text,so that readers can fully access the information of the original. The report shows that the three principles of Skopos theory are applicable to the practice of translating Lao literary and artistic texts.Under the guidance of the theory, translators not only ensure that readers fully access the information of the original text, but also make the translation more fluent and easy-to-understand.In addition, the translator flexibly adopts various translation methods and techniques, such as lexical conversion, sequencing, and adding and subtracting sentence components, which are also useful for the other translators who translate similar texts.
