Listening plays an important role in language learning.Listening level is directly related to the effect of language communication and seriously restricts the development of oral skills. Therefore, listening teaching is particularly important in English teaching. In traditional listening teaching, teachers usually emphasize isolated vocabulary learning, which makes it difficult for students to accurately identify and understand the text to be heard in time.Lexical chunks are a common phenomenon in language. They have both lexical and grammatical functions. They are holistic and can meet the needs of students’ short-term memory in listening comprehension to a certain extent.A large number of studies have pointed out that lexical chunks play an important role in improving the quality of listening teaching, and it is necessary to further explore the application of lexical chunks in listening teaching.Topics have the function of creating situations, which is beneficial to both language teaching and language acquisition. This study attempts to apply lexical chunks approach to senior high school English listening class based on topics.By answering the following two questions, this study explores the effect of lexical chunk approach in senior high school English listening teaching.(1)What is the effect of topic-based lexical chunks teaching model on senior high school students’ English listening proficiency?(2)What effects does this teaching model have on students in terms of their listening attitude, understanding of lexical chunks and satisfaction with the current listening class? This study takes two parallel classes of Grade 2 in a private high school in Bozhou City,Anhui Province as the research subjects. There are 45 students in the experimental class and 45 students in the control class, and the students in the experimental class are divided into three groups according to the pre-test scores. The experimental class adopted the topic-based lexical chunks teaching model, while the control class adopted the traditional teaching model. The research used tests, questionnaires and interviews as research instruments, and used Spss 25.0 to process the data. The research results show that: firstly, from the comparative analysis of the results of pre-test and post-test listening scores,it can be seen that compared with the traditional listening teaching model, the application of topic-based lexical chunks teaching model can effectively improve the listening level of high school students. From the results of the three groups, the most significant improvement in listening performance is the middle level group, followed by the low level group, and finally the high level group.Secondly, the results of questionnaires and interviews show that this teaching model can not only improve students’ attitude towards listening, but also enhance their understanding of lexical chunks. Most students hold a positive attitude towards this teaching model. The pedagogical implications of this study are as follows: Firstly, the topic-based lexical chunks teaching model should be student-centered and give full play to the leading role of teachers.Secondly, listening teaching should take different levels of students into consideration and provide personalized guidance in time.In addition, teachers should make appropriate adjustments to specific aspects of listening teaching according to the actual situation of the classroom.
