Traditional high school English teaching plays an important role in helping students to enlarge their vocabulary, but there are still some deficiencies. For example, the vocabulary teaching activities are fragmented, the activity chain lacks relevance, and some students have low interest in vocabulary learning and have not developed good vocabulary learning habits.High school English teaching based on thematic meaning exploration emphasizes sorting out and summarizing language knowledge, cultural knowledge, language skills and learning strategies related to the theme, and designing learning activities as a whole around the thematic context. In view of this, this study aims to explore the effect of vocabulary teaching based on thematic meaning exploration on high school students’ English vocabulary learning interest and vocabulary learning habits. The research mainly answers the following questions:(1)What effects does the vocabulary teaching based on thematic meaning exploration have on students’ interest in vocabulary learning?(2)What effects does the vocabulary teaching based on thematic meaning exploration have on students’ vocabulary learning habits?First,on the basis of previous studies, the author built a vocabulary teaching application framework based on thematic meaning exploration. This framework aims to improve students’ interest in vocabulary learning and classroom participation by exploring the thematic meaning and increasing the opportunities for students to perceive and use vocabulary through a variety of classroom teaching activities.Based on this, the author conducted two rounds of action research for 12 weeks in a senior high school in Luoshan County. The study collected data through questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation, and analyzed the questionnaire data using SPSS26.0.After analyzing the questionnaire data, interviews and classroom observation records, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Vocabulary teaching based on thematic meaning exploration can stimulate students’ interest in vocabulary learning.Specifically, students’ enthusiasm to participate in vocabulary learning activities in class has been improved and the atmosphere in the class became more lively.(2)Vocabulary teaching based on thematic meaning exploration has a positive influence on students’ vocabulary learning habits.According to the data analysis results of the questionnaire, students’ vocabulary learning habits changed before and after the study. However, perhaps because the study period is short, the change is not obvious. But the students who took part in the interviews said their vocabulary learning habits had improved.Specifically, when they encounter new words, they will consciously infer and guess the meaning of new words based on the context, and acquire vocabulary by means of classroom activities in the process of exploring the thematic meaning. In this study,we draw the following teaching implications:(1)In the teaching process, teachers should try to avoid making students understand and memorize vocabulary in isolation.(2)In the process of exploring the thematic meaning, teachers should increase the frequency of target vocabulary, promote students’ perception of vocabulary, improve students’ understanding of vocabulary, and deepen their memory of vocabulary. |
