| Bian Hongru(1895-1976),known as Zong Meng,was known by his character after the September 18 Incident.He was a native of Gaiping(present-day Gaizhou),Liaoning province.He was a famous historian,ancient documentarian and cataloguer in the late Qing and early Ming dynasties,and can be regarded as a pioneer in the study of modern northeastern history,a pioneer in the study of northeastern ancient literature and a representative figure in the field of northeastern cultural relics and archaeology.He was the director of the Liaoning Provincial Library,a member of the Standing Committee of the Museum of the Eastern Provinces,a professor at Northeastern University,and the director of the Liaoning Provincial Education Department.During his lifetime,Bian Zongmeng devoted himself to the collation of northeastern documents,library construction and the study of northeastern history.He is the author of such scholarly monographs as The Mission of the Liaoning Provincial Library and its Implementation,A Bibliography for the Study of Northeast China,A Series of Northeastern Documents,and The Understanding of the History of Northeast China.This article discusses Bian Hongru and his writings to provide further research for the benefit of the academic community.The paper is divided into three main parts:Part I: An introduction to Bian Hongru and his academic life,reflecting his life trajectory and academic journey.First,Bian Hongru’s academic activities are divided into three periods:the period of study at the Shenyang Higher Normal School from 1917 to 1922,the period of work in museums and libraries from 1928 to 1931,and the period of patriotic salvation after the September 18 Incident from 1934 to 1948.The second part of the book examines Bian Hongru’s academic life,including his ancestral family history,his academic affiliations,and his exile during the war.Part II: a synopsis of Bian Hongru’s writings,focusing mainly on the background,compilation style,main content and academic value of his works.The writings are divided into four categories,namely,the library journal,the catalogue,the anthology,and the history,and each category is described in chronological order of publication.The works in this category include "The Mission of the Liaoning Provincial Library and its Implementation","Report on a Visit to the Dalian Library","Modern International Bibliography","Bibliography for the Study of Northeast China","Bibliography","Northeast Literature Series","Northeast Homeland Collection",and "History of Northeast China(Outline)","Northeast History Research Outline","New Liaoning and New Shenyang".Part III: discusses the historical status and documentary value of Bian Hongru and his writings in the fields of Northeastern literature,cultural relics and archaeology,and historical geography.Bian Hongru’s various writings document the local cultural relics and library literature of the Northeast,preserving the historical and geographical history of the Northeast since the pre-Qin period as well as the international situation during the Republican period,providing an important reference for the examination of frontier geography,Northeast historical relics,ethnic origins,and diplomatic relations.At the same time,it discusses the shortcomings of Bian Hongru’s work and further establishes the importance of Bian Hongru in the history of the development of ancient literature and the historical geography of the Northeast of China. |
