| National awareness was officially proposed for the first time in 2015 in the Proposal of the communist Party of China Central Committee for Formulating the 13thFive Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development.Communist Party of China has been stressing the importance of combining national awareness education with classroom teaching.So,this study has significant practical value for the education of national awareness in middle school English teaching.This study first reviews the literature about the research subject in order to give a definition of national awareness education in foreign language teaching.After that,30English teachers from Wengchang Overseas Chinese Middle School are interviewed and600 middle school students who are from Wengchang Overseas Chinese Middle School are invited to fill out a questionnaire,accompanied by classroom observation and text analysis of teaching materials,for the purpose of analyzing the current situation of national awareness education in middle school English teaching.This study aims to answer the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of national awareness education in junior high school English teaching?2.Are there any problems or challenges to the current situation?If the answer is yes,what are the problems?3.What are the effective solutions or strategies to solve these problems?The major research findings are shown below.First of all,the definition of national awareness includes two aspects which are the cognition of national conditions and the affective identity.Secondly,the education of national awareness in middle school English teaching is developing in a positive direction.However,there are some problems and challenges in the education of national awareness in junior high school English teaching.For students,their national awareness is not deficient,which mainly reflects in that students’knowledge about China’s politics,history,geography,culture and so on is generally accord with their current cognitive level.In addition,their patriotic feelings are relatively strong.However,history,geography and political classes are the main battle positions for the education of national awareness.English class makes little effort for that.As for English teachers in junior high school,they have realized the significance and necessity of educating national awareness in middle school English teaching.However,the education of national awareness in English teaching is inefficient because of the teaching conditions,teaching ideas and teaching methods.As for teaching materials,the compulsory middle school English textbooks of FLTRP have a positive effect in improving students’English language competence.There is still much room for improvement in the arrangement of national awareness elements.Based on these problems,this study tries to put forward some suggestions and strategies.First,teachers should update their teaching concepts and adopt different teaching methods and teaching activities to impart the contents of national awareness in English class.Besides,the distribution of national awareness in English teaching materials is advised to be more reasonable and comprehensive.Finally,schools are needed to provide stronger and more reliable support for the education of national awareness.In a word,teachers,editors of the teaching materials and schools play an important role in the education of national awareness in middle school English teaching. |
