With the economic globalization and integration,English has become a universal language.With the development of linguistics and the creation of cultural linguistics,it is now increasingly recognized that a foreign language and its corresponding culture can't realistically be separated,and that the understanding of a foreign culture can't be neglected in the teaching of a foreign language.It is pointed out clearly in the Standard of English Curriculum for Full-time Compulsory Education(2011)that language has rich cultural connotations,and in the process of learning English,learning the culture of English-speaking countries is beneficial to the understanding of English and its usage,to deepening the understanding and love towards the excellent traditional Chinese culture,to acceptance towards advanced culture that belongs to human being,and to the cultivation of the world awareness for students.So,in English teaching,the cultural content should be expanded gradually by teachers according to students' age and cognitive ability and cultivate their cross-cultural awareness.Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standards(2017)puts cultural awareness into one of the core literacy of English subjects,and proposes that the cultivation of cultural awareness are helpful for students to enhance their national identity and family feelings,strengthen the cultural self-confidence,and establish a sense of community of human destiny.However,after 10 years of English learning,many Chinese students can be satisfied with the score on the test paper,but they can't communicate with the English native speaker successfully.One of the reasons is that they are lack of the cross-cultural awareness and they can't really understand the national culture of English speaking country,which influences the language learning.In order to cultivate students' cross-cultural awareness,we should find the problems and find out the feasible strategy to solve the problems.The purpose of this study is to survey the status quo of cross-cultural awareness cultivation in English teaching in rural middle high school.In order to find out the existed problems in cross-cultural awareness cultivation of English education in rural middle high schools,this paper takes English teachers and students of two rural middle high schools under the jurisdiction of Huangshi country as research object,and through the use of a questionnaire survey method,interview method to collect data,the author analyzes the present situation of cross-cultural awareness cultivation in English teaching in rural middle high schools.Then the author summarizes existing problems and reasons for problems in culture teaching of English education in rural middle high schools.The existing problems in rural middle high school are as follows: the teachers and students haven't realized the significance of cross-cultural awareness in English teaching and haven't paid enough attention to it;the way of culture teaching is monotonous and rigid;and the content for culture is suitable for rural area students' real life and their cognitive level.Followed by the above problems,the author analyzes the reasons for the problems from the aspects of the teacher,student,teaching methods and teaching materials.In the last part of the paper,the author put forward some strategies to improve the cross-cultural awareness cultivation in English education in rural middle high schools.
