An Analysis Of Later Wittgenstein’s Concept Of "Understanding"

Wittgenstein sought an idealized language in the early stages and turned his gaze to daily life in his later period,mainly devoted himself to the study of the philosophy of daily language,in which he thought deeply about "understanding" in language.Starting from Wittgenstein’s concept of "understanding",this paper explores the critique of linguistic essentialism in Wittgenstein’s later philosophy and the publicity of the use of language in daily social practice.The first is the critique of traditional metaphysics by the concept of "understanding",which unfolds from two aspects: language and mental processes."Understanding" is not a one-and-done ostensive definition,nor is it an endless explanation that comes from being infinitely close to an idea."Understanding" is also not a time-continuous mental process,not a private inner feeling or a reflection of inner essence.This is the traditional perspective of interpreting Wittgenstein’s thought as an anti-essentialist "philosophy of therapy." Another perspective aims to examine Wittgenstein’s idea of linguistic practice,while eliminating the coercive unity and universality brought by traditional metaphysics,and looking at how understanding is achieved from a practical point of view,and how understanding is produced when people understand the world and communicate and connect with each other.First,understanding is based on the publicity of language,understanding requires standards,standards are public and objective,and private language cannot achieve understanding.Understanding is that we can identify various rules in our lives,participate in activities in various rules together,different rules represent different language games,different games have similarities,but no identity.And we follow the rules and play different language games,which are rooted in our life forms,The comprehensibility of our language is achieved through linguistic practice in a common form of life,there are differences and connections between different forms of life,it is through their connections,through the practical activities in life,to achieve understanding between different forms of life.Wittgenstein did not go to extremes along the path of postmodernist philosophy,he tried to help us clarify our thinking by depicting and discussing some familiar scenes from our lives.In today’s society,where people’s lives are facing more and more uncertainty,the dialectical interpretation of Wittgenstein’s concept of "understanding" has important reference significance for people to seek the authenticity and reliability of their own lives beyond the two extremes of paranoia and chaos,and the possibility of being understood and understood by others.
