Reading patterns and learning intentions both affect our memory. In terms of reading patterns, reading aloud can get better memory performance compared with reading silently,a phenomenon known as the production effect. In terms of learning intention, intentional learning brings better memory effects than incidental learning.According to previous studies, different theoretical explanations have been put forward for the advantages of production effect and intentional learning.Among them, the explanation for the processing mechanism of the two is overlapped. It is believed that the two may originate from the same memory system,or may be the influence of the synergy of the two effects.Firstly,Previous studies on production effects have only explored the production effects under the condition of intentional reading, but have rarely studied it under the condition of incidental reading, and have not directly compared the results under different conditions.Secondly, the study of intentional learning has also involved the impact of intentional learning on memory under the condition of reading aloud, but has not directly compared the results under different reading modes,Therefore,no research has directly combined the two effects. Finally, the research on intentional learning is mainly concentrated in the field of second language learning, mainly in English literature, and the research on production effect is also mainly in monolingual vocabulary materials. For different language materials,it is not clear whether the impact of production effect and intentional learning on memory will change. Therefore, this paper also includes vocabulary materials as variables. Therefore, this study takes college students as the subject group to explore the influence of intentional learning and reading mode on vocabulary recognition memory in different vocabulary materials.Experiment 1 aims to explore the impact of learning intention and reading mode on vocabulary recognition and memory. On the one hand,it verifies the role of production effects, and on the other hand,it explores whether learning intention and reading mode interact.Experiment 2 was conducted 2(intentional learning: intentional learning, incidental learning)× 2(Reading mode: reading aloud and reading silently)In the intra-test experiment design. The results showed that stable production effect and dominant effect of intentional learning were found in the recognition test, and the interaction between reading mode and intentional learning was significant, which could effectively promote the memory of silent reading under the condition of intentional learning, but no dominant effect was found in reading aloud.Experiment 2 changed intentional learning into inter-test variable to avoid the influence of sequence effect on the experiment, and added the variable of vocabulary material to explore whether the impact of learning intention and reading patterns on vocabulary recognition memory would change under different vocabulary materials.Experiment 2 carry out 2(intentional learning: intentional learning, incidental learning)× 2(Reading mode: reading aloud and silently)× 2(Vocabulary materials: Chinese word and English word)Three-factor mixed experimental design,in which intentional learning is inter-test variable, reading mode and vocabulary materials are intra-test variables, and the order of the occurrence of vocabulary materials and reading mode is random, and the rest of the experimental process is consistent with experiment 1.The results were consistent with the results of experiment 1.The stable production effect and the dominant effect of intentional learning were found, while the main effect of vocabulary materials was not significant. Moreover, the interaction between reading mode and intentional learning is significant.Intentional learning can effectively promote the memory of silent reading, but its dominant effect on reading aloud has not been found.Experiment 3 changed vocabulary materials from intra subject variables to inter subject variables in Experiment 2,with the aim of conducting a cross experimental comparison of different language materials was.Experiment 3 conducted 2(intentional learning: intentional learning, incidental learning)× 2(Reading mode: reading aloud and silently)× 2(Vocabulary materials: Chinese word and English word)Three-factor mixed experimental design,in which the reading mode is the intra-test variable, and the intentional learning and vocabulary materials are the inter-test variables. The results showed that the stable production effect and the dominant effect of intentional learning were found, while the main effect of vocabulary materials was not significant. This part was consistent with the results of experiments 1 and 2.The interaction between reading mode and intentional learning was significant, but different from experiments 1 and 2.Intentional learning significantly improved the memory of silent reading than reading aloud.Experiment 4 changed the distraction task from 1 minute to 5 minutes to explore whether memory retention would change over time under different reading patterns and learning intentions.Experiment 4 was conducted 2(intentional learning: intentional learning, incidental learning)× 2(Reading mode: reading aloud and silently)× 2(Vocabulary materials: Chinese word and English word)Three-factor mixed experimental design,in which the reading mode is the intra-test variable, the intentional learning and vocabulary materials are the inter-test variables. The results showed that the dominant effect of stable production and intentional learning was significant, while the main effect of vocabulary materials was not significant, which was consistent with the results of experiments 1 and 2.The interaction between reading mode and intentional learning was significant, but different from experiments 1,2 and 3.Intentional learning significantly improved the memory of reading aloud than silent reading. To sum up,this study shows that:(1)the dominant effects of production and intentional learning are stable;(2)The interaction between production effects and learning intentions can change under different time and memory load conditions, with both at least partially functioning in the same memory system;(3)Intentional learning has a good advantage in memory retention of delayed reading and reading sliently.
