A Study On The Effect Of Different Vocabulary Presenting Modes On English Vocabulary Memorization

In Higher Vocational Colleges in China,both teachers and students are faced with difficulties in the teaching and learning of English vocabulary.For example,it is difficult to remember and easy to forget;it increases slowly and the enthusiasm for learning vocabulary is not high.This research attempts to investigate the effect of vocabulary presentation modes on vocabulary learning.Based on memory theory,information processing theory and elaboration theory in cognitive psychology,this study takes three parallel classes of a vocational school in Suzhou as the research objects,analyzes the effect of different vocabulary presentation modes on the English vocabulary memory through teaching experiments,questionnaires and interview.Wordlist,pictures in PPT and example sentence presentation modes are adopted in three classes respectively.An immediate test and a delayed test are conducted after each lesson and a week later to acquire their impact on short-term and long-term memory.The data of 7 immediate and 7 delayed tests were processed by SPSS 24 for analysis.A questionnaire is conducted on all the 90 students who participated in the vocabulary tests and six students are interviewed for feedback on the three modes.In addition,a questionnaire is carried out among 77 teachers from 7 higher vocational colleges to understand the current situation of vocabulary presentation.Immediate tests show no difference among the three presentation modes in short-term memory.However,the delayed tests demonstrate a better effect of PPT on long-term memory while wordlist and example sentence presentation modes have similar effect.The three modes have no effect on memory of word classes.The results of teachers’ questionnaire show that at present,most teachers use wordlist and a few use PPT.The feedback from students’ questionnaire shows that PPT presentation mode has more positive effect on short-term and long-term memory.Students in PPT presentation class have higher motivation than those in the other two classes to learn vocabulary,higher efficiency in vocabulary learning,The results of students’ interview show that students in PPT presentation class are more satisfied with the effect of vocabulary presentation used.It is hoped this study can help higher vocational English teachers realize the importance of adopting appropriate vocabulary presentation mode,increase reasonably the use of PPT in presenting vocabulary and strengthen vocabulary memory according to the law of forgetting.
