Since its introduction to China, oil painting has gradually shown a trend of localization and nationalization.Generations of oil painters have created many oil paintings with Chinese characteristics in their creative practice and exploration of their own culture. The nationalization of oil painting shows the cultural spirit of the Chinese nation and becomes an integral part of traditional culture. The formation of Chinese imaginative oil painting is an important achievement of the nationalization of oil painting and a typical example of the integration of Chinese and Western art, whose status and importance are self-evident.This paper mainly studies the origin and development of imaginative oil painting,as well as the aesthetic characteristics of imaginative oil painting, analyzes the works of representative painters of imaginative oil painting, and reflects through personal practice in the graduation creation of oil painting. The first is a brief exposition of the influence of Western expressionism and ancient Chinese philosophical roots as well as traditional aesthetics on the development of imaginative oil painting.Secondly, the aesthetic characteristics of imaginative oil painting in terms of mood, shape, color and texture are sorted out.Through the exploration of the composition, color language, and mood expression of four representative painters of imaginative oil painting,Wu Guanzhong,Su Tianci, and Dai Shihe,we combine these expression techniques with the elements of Chinese cave paintings in our personal creation.Through the composition of the group painting, the creation of mottled texture, the generalized and condensed design of the figures in the painting, and the use of large color blocks with thick brush, the work finally presents a rich and strong imagery interest.
