After entering the era of globalization,China’s economy has developed rapidly,its international status has been continuously improved,and it has gradually moved to the center of the world stage,and its influence in the world has increased day by day.As the embodiment of national soft power and strong international competitiveness,the construction and external communication of national image have received increasing attention.With its natural interdisciplinary nature,international Chinese education is one of the effective ways to construct a national image,and Chinese teaching materials therefore play a unique role in the construction and dissemination of national image.Therefore,based on the existing research,this study examines the construction of national image in international Chinese textbooks.The first chapter combs through the literature and finds that the number of studies on the construction of national images in international Chinese textbooks from the perspective of multimodal symbols is small.Therefore,this study selects the general-purpose Chinese textbooks "Mastering Chinese" and "Expressway to Chinese" and localized Chinese textbooks "Integrated Chinese" and "Discover China" as the research objects,analyzes and compares the national image in the two types of textbooks from three perspectives: national image selection,attitude tendency and the relationship between illustration and discourse,and makes suggestions based on the analysis results,so as to facilitate the preparation of international Chinese textbooks.The second chapter summarizes the criteria for extracting national image elements and the criteria for judging attitude tendencies based on the content analysis of four sets of Chinese textbooks based on previous research.Based on the standards of Chapter 2,Chapters 3 and 4 conduct statistical analysis of the national image elements and attitude tendencies in the general Chinese textbooks "Mastering Chinese" and "Expressway to Chinese" and localized Chinese textbooks "Integrated Chinese" and "Discover China",and collect and analyze the illustrations in the discourse with a certain national image dimension as the unified theme,so as to explore how the discourse and illustrations jointly construct the national image.Chapter 5 through comparative analysis,it is found that the two types of textbooks in the construction of national image similarities and differences,in the selection of national image dimension,the four sets of textbooks are more focused on the construction of China’s cultural image and social image,in the attitude tendency are mainly positive attitude tendency,localized Chinese textbooks pay more attention to the role of illustration in the construction of national image,and the illustrations in the texts of the two sets of general textbooks are more used for the training of language points.It summarizes the shortcomings of the current teaching materials in presenting the national image,and puts forward targeted suggestions for writing: 1.Build a national image in multiple dimensions;2.Create a positive and objective national image;3.Pay attention to the role of illustration in the process of national image construction of teaching materials,and follow the trend of visualization.
