| The GEO is a global environmental assessment report by UNEP that outlines the current environmental situation, predicts the future trends and analyzes the effectiveness of policies. The report examines the severely damaged global ecological environment and calls on all the countries to cooperate to achieve internationally agreed environmental goals. Therefore, the GEO report has a significant impact on the development of the global ecological environment to a certain extent.Biodiversity,as one of the major themes of the GEO report, has always affected our earth. The thesis conducts the ecological discourse analysis of biodiversity part in the GEO report. The language strategies of the report are studied to reveal the hidden ecosophy, which aims to advocate the ideology that is harmonious with the ecological environment, resist the ideology that is contradictory with the ecological environment, and finally call on the people to reflect on ourselves, arouse the people’s attention to the ecological environment and improve ecological awareness.Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional analysis model and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar, the thesis conducts the quantitative and qualitative analysis of biodiversity part in the six GEO reports. The thesis is mainly carried out from the following three aspects: Firstly, linguistic features are studied from the perspective of three metafunctions in Systemic Functional Grammar;Secondly, the intertextuality of the reports is explored from the two aspects of news sources and reporting modes;Thirdly, the ecosophy of Huang Guowen’s harmonious discourse analysis is used to explain the hidden ideology of the report. The findings are as follows:(1)From the perspective of interpersonal function,GEO reports strive to give an objective and scientific description of the ecological environment; From the perspective of textual function, social factors account for the largest proportion in the participants’ roles, which reflects the GEO report emphasizes humans’ role in the ecological environment. From the perspective of ideational function, the material process and the relational process account for the largest proportion, which reflects the GEO report focuses on the role of human beings and the synergistic effect of the ecosystem;(2)The intertextuality analysis shows that the GEO report tends to use direct quotations and specific news sources, which indicates that GEO report attempts to present rigorous and persuasive expressions to readers;(3)Combined with the ecosophy of Huang Guowen’s harmonious discourse analysis, the GEO report is found to pursue the harmonious coexistence between human beings and ecology and be consistent with the ecosophy including the assumption of people-orientedness,and the three principles of the conscience, proximity and regulation, which encourages the people to think about ecological discourse and behaviors from a Chinese traditional perspective and guides the people to form an ecological awareness of harmonious coexistence with nature. |
