There are several literary works that have been translated from English to Chinese in China, yet there are comparatively few literary works translated from Chinese to English.Translation is indispensable to the transmission of Chinese literature to the foreign countries, because lots of traditional and nontraditional cultures are included in the literary works.Shen Congwen’s masterpiece,The Border Town,is a traditional Chinese country-flavor novel.Since it was published in 1934,it has become a source of attention for a wide range of readers, with its vivid country flavor descriptions and one-of-a-kind writing skills. This paper is divided into five sections: introduction, literature review, theoretical framework, text analysis, and conclusion. The research background, research purpose, research significance, and research structure of this paper are all outlined in the introduction. The second part is the literature review. This part reviews the previous studies on English versions of The Border Town at home and aboard, previous studies on the contemporary novels from Eco-translatology and previous studies on the translation of character dialogues. The theoretical framework and research methodology make up the third section. The fourth part compares the two translations of character dialogues in The Border Town from translational eco-environment and three-dimensional transformations: linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension. The conclusion is presented in the fifth part.In this study, the author firstly adopts the method of close reading to sort out character dialogues in The Border Town, then uses eco-translatology theory and method to compare the two translations of character dialogues in The Border Town,to study how to translate character dialogues from the perspective of eco-translatology and provide references for both the translation of character dialogues in The Border Town and the translation of character dialogues in other literary works. What’s more,it can provide new ideas for the future study of applying eco-translatology into the translation of dialogue between characters. Here are the conclusions from the study.Firstly,Kinkley chooses two translation methods: in-text interpretations and out-text endnotes, while the Yangs just adopt out-text endnotes when necessary. However,in contrast to the version by Yang Xiangyi Yang and Gladys Yang,Kinkley’s in-text interpretation is more faithful to the context of the source text.Secondly,in the translation of The Border Town,Yang’s use of foreignization exceeds that of domestication, while the opposite is true of Kinkley’s translation. The author also found that different translation strategies are adopted by the translators for different types of character dialogues from the translation of character dialogues.Thirdly,in the two English versions,Kinkley’s translation is more in keeping with the tastes of the target language readers;Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang follow closely the narrative structure of the original work, using more of a deleted or omitted translation.
