| Jiangxi has been a place of commercial prosperity since ancient times. Its superior geographical location, dense river network, and rich and diverse natural resources provide Jiangxi with excellent congenital conditions for commercial development.Since the Song Dynasty, the rapidly developing commodity economy has made Jiangxi’s commerce gradually prosperous.During the Ming and Qing dynasties,Jiangxi was densely populated with towns, forming a thriving trade network of towns, with goods gathering and circulating throughout the country. In addition to ordinary commercial activities, towns also have diverse social functions, playing an important role in the traditional Jiangxi regional society. However, with the breaking of the one-port trade policy in modern times, the traditional commercial pattern has undergone significant changes.Jiangxi’s important position on the commercial road has gradually been replaced, and the previously prosperous town economy has gradually declined. At the same time, with the implementation of the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty,in order to revitalize commerce internally and strengthen the negotiation between merchant groups and foreign businesses externally,in 1904,the Qing government issued Article 26 of the "Concise Constitution of the Chamber of Commerce",officially proposing to establish business associations in various provinces or commercial ports with prosperous commerce throughout the country, and establish business branches in places with less developed commerce. With the establishment of various chambers of commerce organizations throughout the country,Jiangxi,as an inland province, has successively established business associations in Nanchang,Jiujiang, and Jingdezhen, and established business branches in Wucheng,Zhangshu, and other places. With the restructuring and development in different historical periods,Jiangxi has continuously increased in number and improved in function. With the extensive establishment of chambers of commerce, the links between chambers of commerce have become increasingly close, and the network of chambers of commerce has gradually formed, playing an important role in commodity trade, goods transportation, and other aspects. There is a close relationship between county, city,or town chambers of commerce established in areas with a certain commercial base and traditional town networks, with overlapping regions and overlapping functions. The network of chambers of commerce gradually permeated all aspects of traditional town networks. With the process of modernization, traditional towns gradually declined.Through chambers of commerce and their networks, some towns completed the transformation to cities. The original commercial function of the town network and the network function of the city chamber of commerce were separated and reorganized, thus completing the transformation of modernization. |
