Horror movies are one of the important genres of genre movies,not only because of their continuous and stable market demand and income,they have certain commercial value,but also have considerable research value in the sense of aesthetic presentation and cultural research.Under the combined force of the studio system,star system,and genre creation,genre films matured in the "Golden Age" of Hollywood in the United States are not concepts that are subjectively invented or invented by film theorists and film critics,but the production and consumption of films.products derived from this essential property.Due to the audience’s preference for certain factors in certain films,these key factors are repeated to form a relatively stable pattern,with relatively stable narrative modes,production mechanisms,and spectacles of desire.These key elements are what Richard Matterby calls genre elements.Any type of film has relatively stable genre elements that will continue to innovate with social changes.Horror movies,this genre mainly stimulates,presents and fulfills one of the primitive human desires,the desire for fear.The genre elements of domestic horror movies include three main aspects:cultural and psychological elements,content elements and form elements:Cultural and psychological factors mainly refer to the social and cultural psychological sources of fear.;the content elements mainly refer to the narrative mode and core of the film,which showing a strong sense of morality and family ethics compared with mainstream Hollywood horror movies;formal elements mainly refer to the visual spectacle created by horror movies,that is,through the formal elements of photography,scene scheduling,performance,costumes,sound and other formal elements,death is used to metaphor life,beauty emerges from ugliness.It makes the artistic imagination of horror materialized and serves the film creators to reveal the theme of the film.Although referring to the industrial standards,smooth production and classic works of Hollywood horror movies,domestic horror movies are still in the exploratory period,but in terms of the development and market expansion of commercial movies,they still have considerable value for discussion.From the perspective of the development of domestic horror movies,in general,they are in a state of constant change,continuous development and gradual formation of a movement with national cultural characteristics.In the early 20th century,horror films were inseparable from "ghost films" and "gods and monsters films".Under the background of the change of new and old cultures and the unstable political environment,horror movies,to some extent,vent people’s fear of war and anxiety about the invasion of Western culture.In the early days of the founding of New China,a large number of horror elements were used in thriller films.After the reform and opening up,horror films have more innovations in audio-visual language and narrative structure,and elements such as comedy,crime,and action are used in the creation of horror films.Since the 21st century,with the industrialization reform of Chinese films,the pace of exploration of commercial horror films and genre fusion has been accelerating,and three sub-types have been formed:romance horror films,comedy horror films,and fantasy horror films.The practice of genre fusion enriches the narrative mode of horror movies,strengthens the social commentary function of horror movies,expands the development space of horror movies,and becomes a new development direction for commercial horror movies to achieve breakthroughs in the future.Faced with the development background of China becoming a "film strong country" in the new era,domestic commercial horror movies need to be further developed,not only to reflect the distinctive national culture and art in aesthetic style,but also to take into account the commonality and uniqueness in content.After sorting out the previous research results of Chinese horror films,this paper considers the development trend of Chinese horror films in the new era and the influence of genre fusion on horror films.This study believes that Chinese horror movies should be serialized,focusing on film intellectual property rights and branding operations,cultivating a relatively stable audience group,and reducing the marginal cost of publicity costs,providing good creation and production conditions for the fusion of horror movie genres on the supply side;learn from the experience of international horror movie genre fusion,and explore connection and borrowing between genres,expand cultural expressions,explore new development space for horror movies in creation;enhance the horror film industry on the cyberspace interaction,with the process of adapting to the development trend of digitalization,networking and intelligence,it provides opportunities for horror films in visual spectacle stimulation,immersive experience,multi-dimensional communication and enhancement of narrative ability.
