Grit,as a personality trait,is manifested in maintaining a lasting enthusiasm and endurance for a set goal,as well as dedication and unremitting efforts.Since Angela Lee Duckworth put forward that grit is passion and persistence for long-term goals and the key to successful learning, many scholars have started to turn their research to the effect of grit on education, confirming that grit can partially predict students’ English learning achievement. However, most of these studies are based on the impact of grit on education and English learning.Few studies have explored the effects of Language-specific grit(L2Grit)on foreign language learning.Besides, there is also little research on the mechanisms by which grit affects English academic achievement, such as whether there is a mediating role for English learning self-efficacy between Language-specific grit and English learning achievement. This remains to be further explored, especially in the context of English language teaching in Chinese high schools. This study mainly explores the correlation among Senior high school students’ L2 grit,English learning self-efficacy,and English learning achievement. It investigates whether English learning self-efficacy is mediating between high school students’ L2 grit and English learning achievement. The following three research questions are to be addressed:(1)What are the general profiles of L2 grit level and English learning self-efficacy of Chinese English learners in high schools?(2)What is the relationship between L2 grit and English learning achievement?(3)Does English learning selfefficacy mediate the relationship between L2 grit and English learning achievement? This study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods to conduct a questionnaire survey and interview research with 352 senior high school students in a high school in Chongqing. The L2 Grit Scale of Teimouri et al.was used to measure the L2 grit level of students, and the English learning self-efficacy scale of Zhang Risheng was used to test the English efficacy of students. The reliability and validity of these scale were tested.Research indicates:1.High school students’ L2 grit level is at a moderate-high level, and their English learning self-efficacy is at a low-moderate level.2.There is a significant positive correlation between high school students’ L2 grit,English learning self-efficacy,and English learning achievement.3.English learning self-efficacy plays a significant mediating role between high school students’ English learning achievement and grit.In general, the development in L2 grit of high school students is at a moderate level. In the future,we can try to improve the L2 grit level of high school students by enhancing their English learning self-efficacy. |
