| Among the four basic language skills,writing,indicating the comprehensive language ability of language learners,is a rather complicated and productive skill.However,the existing problems largely alleviate the effects of English writing teaching,which are errors in diction and collocations,lack of proper cohesive devices between sentences and paragraphs,time-consuming language organization,and students’ low confidence in writing.Worse still,with the further reforms of vocational education,the Vocational College Entrance Examination puts forward a higher requirement for students’ writing proficiency.Thus,the research aims to figure out the effects of the Lexical Chunk Approach on vocational high school students’ writing.The thesis mainly addresses the following four questions:(1)What is the impact of the Lexical Chunk Approach on vocational high school students’ writing scores?(2)What is the impact of the Lexical Chunk Approach on the number of lexical chunks in students’ writing compositions?(3)What is the impact of the Lexical Chunk Approach on vocational high school students’ writing accuracy and fluency?(4)What is the impact of the Lexical Chunk Approach on vocational high school students’ writing attitudes?The study is carried out in two classes of grade three in Yongzhou Vocational High School,which are randomly divided into an experimental group(EG)and a control group(CG).In the 16-week teaching experiment,EG are instructed to have chunk-based language input,review,and output.For CG,they are not exposed to the concept of lexical chunks at this moment,but they will continue to carry out the regular teaching practices.After the experiment,the author collected the data through texts,questionnaires,and an interview.All the data will be analyzed by the software SPSS.The results revealed that the Lexical Chunk Approach can improve students’ writing scores because the post-test scores in EC are much higher than those in CC.As the students in the experimental group improved their ability to accumulate,consolidate,and use lexical chunks,the application of the Lexical Chunk Approach can also increase the number of lexical chunks in the composition as well as the writing accuracy and fluency.According to the questionnaire and interview,the Lexical Chunk Approach has a positive impact on students’ attitudes towards writing.The experimental group improved substantially in the affective dimension,especially in the student’s interest in writing.In future studies,students should intend to accumulate the lexical chunks and to output them consciously.It is important to cultivate students’ autonomous learning willingness in English writing. |
