"The Analects of Confucius · Taber" said: "the people can use it,not know it.".Most ancient Confucian scholars opposed the interpretation of this sentence as the theory of fooling the people.Since the Republic of China,many people have reinterpreted the meaning of this sentence by changing the sentence reading.Influenced by the political trend of thought,the theory of fooling the people once occupied an overwhelming advantage.Nowadays,with the excavation of Guodian Chu bamboo slips,scholars are more keen to find a theoretical prototype and semantic background for this sentence in order to be closer to the original meaning.According to the article "respecting morality and righteousness",I began to focus on reflection and criticism of the fool’s theory.It can be said that the interpretation trend since modern times has gradually moved from internal interpretation to external interpretation,from the mode of "Understand through internal insight" in song and Ming Dynasties to the mode of "Understand through external opinions" in Han and Tang Dynasties,which is more and more appropriate for grasping the "original meaning" of the text,but deviates from the deep understanding of its "original meaning".This paper attempts to sort out and classify ancient and modern expositions from external interpretation to internal interpretation,return to the perspective of problems in internal interpretation,and summarize the interpretation with synchronic value in various interpretations into four basic problems-the relationship between knowledge and action in epistemology,the relationship between education and governance,laissez-faire and control,and the relationship between wangdao and badao in political philosophy,The classification of "can’t" and "shouldn’t" and the value judgment of whether man is an end or a means,the two defenses of the theory of human division and the relationship between the elite and the public,aristocrats and civilians,so as to continue to provide intellectual enlightenment for modern society.Finally,through the reflection on the internal interpretation and return to the external interpretation,on the premise of conforming to the effective internal interpretation,this paper gives a new interpretation of "making people know" based on Guodian Chu bamboo slips and combined with the Weilinggong chapter of the Analects of Confucius."The people can use the Tao,but you can’t make them known" can be interpreted as: the people can(through the gentleman to cultivate the people’s heart with benevolence)let them embark on the road of pursuing morality,You can’t let them totally understand virtue and pursue highest virtue.
