In the context of the era of artificial intelligence,online information seeking has become increasingly important in the process of translation problem solving.Online information seeking,which is essentially a learning process of actively investigating and developing new knowledge,allows translators to access and analyze information.Meanwhile,it also has an essential impact on improving translation competence.Previous online information seeking research has primarily focused on the impact of objective elements on online information seeking from the standpoint of the translation process,such as distinct characters and settings of the translation assignment and translation directionality.However,the impacts of selfefficacy on translators’ online information-seeking process have received little attention in translation studies,let alone translation performance,where online information seeking is critical.As a result,this study applied translation self-efficacy,a key construct from Social Cognitive Theory,to investigate how translation trainees’ translation self-efficacy affects their online information seeking and translation performance.This study intends to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the relationship between translation trainees’ online information seeking and translation performance?(2)How does translation trainees’ translation self-efficacy play a part in the relationship between their online information seeking and translation performance? In order to answer the above problems,this study firstly constructs the theoretical framework of this thesis based on Social Cognitive Theory and Self-Efficacy Theory and sorts out the relationship among online information seeking,translation self-efficacy,and translation performance;secondly,based on the theoretical framework and previous literature,this thesis further proposes research hypotheses.For research question 1,the researchers in this study proposed hypothesis 1(H1): Online information seeking is positively related to translation trainees’ translation performance.For research question 2,three hypotheses(i.e.,hypotheses 2-4)were established,including H2:Online information seeking is positively related to translation trainees’ translation self-efficacy;H3: Translation self-efficacy mediates the effectiveness of online information seeking to translation performance;and H4: Translation self-efficacy moderates the relationship between translation trainees’ online information seeking and translation performance.To test the above research hypotheses,this study adopts a combined method of quantitative and qualitative evidence to explore the relation among online information seeking,translation self-efficacy,and translation performance.The participants in the study were 51 translation trainees who were selected randomly.This study made extensive use of three different types of data,namely Lex TALE test,questionnaires,and retrospective report to triangulate the results.Finally,this research gathered 50 relevant data units for analysis.After all quantitative and qualitative data had been processed,results showed that:(1)Online information seeking was positively related to translation trainees’ translation performance.Specifically,the learning elements in online information seeking and the use of online resources could help improve the translation performance of translation trainees.(2)Online information seeking was positively related to translation trainees’ translation self-efficacy.Online information seeking could provide translation trainees with the knowledge and problem solutions needed by translators,enhance their confidence in completing translation tasks,and then help them obtain more effective learning and improve translation self-efficacy.(3)Translation self-efficacy fully mediated the effectiveness of online information seeking to translation performance.The increased self-efficacy of translation trainees resulting from the knowledge or new skills they were exposed to in online information seeking facilitates their learning on the Internet,which in turn enhanced their translation performance under the influence of positive psychology.(4)Translation self-efficacy moderated the relationship between translation trainees’ online information seeking and translation performance such that higher translation self-efficacy strengthened the positive relationship between online information seeking and translation performance.This study demonstrates that translation self-efficacy has an impact on translation trainees’ online information seeking and translation performance by examining data collected from them.Meanwhile,paying attention to the cultivation of translation self-efficacy should have certain implications for translation teaching research and practice.
