The reasons for the outbreak of the ’ Cod Dispute ’ between Britain and Iceland include the precedent of previous disputes between Britain and Norway over fisheries, the vigorous protection of maritime rights and interests by third world countries, and the unresolved dispute over the first ’ Cod Dispute ’ between Britain and Iceland in the 1950 s,which led to the outbreak of the second ’ Cod Dispute ’ between Britain and Iceland in 1971 and the third ’Cod Dispute ’ in 1975.The two ’ cod wars ’ in the 1970 s focused on Iceland ’s request to expand its exclusive fishing area to 50 nautical miles and 200 nautical miles, and the final results of the two ’ disputes ’ also ended in Iceland ’s victory. Both Britain and Iceland are important allies of the United States in NATO.In the face of fierce conflicts between allies, the U.S.government has generally adopted a neutral and cautious attitude. In the face of the United Kingdom, the United States on the one hand to infiltrate the British military operations,on the one hand to continue to maintain the necessary cooperation with the United Kingdom,to maintain the relationship between the two countries, while supporting the United Kingdom to join the " European Community " to maintain the overall strength of the alliance. In the face of Iceland, the U.S.government has adopted a more cautious attitude. On the one hand,it urges the Icelandic government to control and resolve disputes. On the other hand,it properly resolves diplomatic pressure from Iceland and continues to strengthen cooperation with Iceland in military, diplomatic and economic fields. The outbreak of the ’ Cod Dispute ’ also had different effects on the alliance between the United States and the two traditional allies,Britain and Iceland. The relationship between the United States and Britain fell into a period of low tide after World War II.At the same time, the two sides are also exploring new relations. The US-Iceland alliance has ushered in some new situations.Iceland ’s diplomatic initiative has been continuously strengthened, and the United States has also taken the opportunity to deepen its influence on Iceland in many fields.Under the diplomatic background of " Nixonism " in the 1970 s,the two " Cod Disputes " affected the U.S.alliance management policy within NATO to some extent. The United States intends to encourage allies to improve their self-defense capabilities and expand the scope of allies ’ autonomy within NATO.At the same time, the United States continues to maintain its presence in the European region, and begins to seek cooperation with allies in a relatively more equal relationship. In a ’ equal ’ attitude to communicate and coordinate with allies, actively mediate disputes between allies, and ensure the overall strength of the alliance by maintaining or strengthening cooperation with allies, maintaining the security and stability of the Western alliance, and strengthening the autonomy of Western alliance members.
