According to data from a Rescue Time survey on mobile phone usage,top-tier smartphone users spend an average of 4 hours and 30 minutes per day on their mobile devices. The rapid development of mobile internet technology is a major reason for the increased duration of smartphone media usage, which is also closely related to individual psychological factors.Individual differences in solitary behavior are associated with different internal needs. Some researchers have pointed out that the advent of mobile phones has provided great convenience for individuals to be alone, such as contacting others, relieving anxiety, and enhancing a sense of belonging. Therefore,it is reasonable to consider solitude as an important factor in enhancing smartphone media usage behavior.Previous research has shown that solitary behavior can be divided into positive solitude, eccentricity, social avoidance, and loneliness.Mobile media usage can be classified into 9 types: social, movies and TV shows, news and gossip, games, shopping, music, finance, fitness, and knowledge acquisition.Although there is some relationship between solitude and smartphone media usage, the specific mechanism of this association is not yet clear and requires further exploration. This study includes two research questions:(1)Does solitude behavior affect mobile media use through mediation effects?(2)Do different solitude behaviors occur simultaneously and produce transformation, and what is their relationship with mobile media use? This study uses meta-analysis and questionnaire surveys to investigate the above questions.First, relevant literature on personality, solitude behavior, and mobile media use is reviewed, and a structural equation model meta-analysis is used to construct the mediation effect of solitude behavior on mobile media use.The "Brief Scale of Solitude Behavior" and the "Self-compiled Questionnaire on Social Media Use Preferences on Mobile Phones" are used to conduct three surveys at half-month intervals on college students.Latent class analysis, latent transition analysis, independent sample t-tests,and multiple linear regression are used to examine the relationship between solitude behavior latent classes and transformation and mobile media use.The results showed that:(1)Positive solitude behavior, eccentricity, and loneliness had a meta-mediated effect on mobile media use;(2)College students’ solitude behavior could be divided into three latent classes: positive solitude behavior type, moderate type, and high solitude behavior type.Individuals in the early moderate and high solitude behavior types would transform into each other, while the stability of positive solitude behavior type was higher;(3)Positive solitude behavior type scored higher in social media use, moderate type scores higher in film and television and music media, and high solitary behavior type scored higher in music media;(4)Positive solitude behavior type maintained a significantly positive prediction for social media use, moderate type maintained a significantly positive prediction for total mobile media use, social networking apps, film and television, leisure apps, and game apps, and high solitude behavior type maintained a significantly positive prediction for music apps use. This study drew the following conclusions:(1)Solitude,eccentricity,and social avoidance could serve as independent mediating variables that affected mobile media use;(2)An increase in the degree of solitude behavior latent class,as well as an increase in non-self-determined solitude behavior types, could cause individuals’ preferences for mobile media use to shift from social to music types;(3)Self-determined solitude latent class that were dominated by self-determined motivation were more stable in their preferences for mobile media use, while non-self-determined solitude latent class were more diverse in their preferences for mobile media use.
