| Mobile phones make our life more convenient. However, improper use of mobile phones will cause mobile phone dependence, which will negatively affect individual’s safety, physical and mental health and social life. The development of adolescents is not mature yet.The problem of mobile phone dependence has become increasingly prominent and has attracted widespread attention. In addition to exploring the influence of mobile phone dependence on adolescents, researchers are also curious about the causes of mobile phone dependence.Among the numerous causes, the parenting style that reflects the nature of parent-child interaction is an important factor that cannot be ignored. In previous studies, researchers have explored the relationship between parenting style and mobile phone dependence from a variable-centered perspective, and found the relationship between several dimensions of parenting style and mobile phone dependence. However,we are unable to integrate these scattered dimensions and look at the relationship between parenting styles and mobile phone dependence from a holistic perspective,person-centered research can make up for this deficiency. In addition, although the problem of mobile phone dependence among high school students is serious, the research on mobile phone dependence of high school students seems insufficient compared with other ages. Therefore, based on the results of latent profile analysis of parenting style, this study explored the relationship between parenting style and mobile phone dependence of high school students from multiple perspectives. It mainly includes the following three studies.Study 1 investigated paternal and maternal parenting style respectively using latent profile analysis.Taking the three dimensions of parenting styles as observation variables and combining the fitting index, the study found that parenting style can be divided into three profiles.According to the differences in the characteristics of the three parenting profiles, they are named as positive style, mixed style, and negative style.Positive parenting style scored higher on emotional warmth dimension and lower on rejection and overprotection dimensions. In contrast, negative parenting style scored higher on the rejection and overprotection dimensions, lower on emotional warmth dimension;mixed parenting style have little difference in scores among three dimensions.Based on the results of latent profile analysis,Study 2 explored the relationship between parenting style and mobile phone dependence of high school students from both cross-sectional and longitudinal perspectives. In the cross-sectional study,ANOVA was used to compare the level of mobile phone dependence among high school students of different parenting profiles. It was found that the three profiles had significant differences in the level of mobile phone dependence. The level of mobile phone dependence under positive parenting style was significantly lower than that of mixed and negative styles. In the longitudinal study, based on a one-year follow-up survey,mixed-design ANOVAs was used to investigate the stability of the differences obtained in the cross-sectional study, and to explore the development of high school students’ mobile phone dependence of different parenting style. The results showed that the interaction between parenting profiles and time was not significant, however, the main effect of parenting profiles was significant. That is,there are significant differences in the level of high school students’ mobile phone dependence among three types, and the differences between the types are stable. In the longitudinal study, high school students with negative parenting style had the highest levels of mobile phone dependence, the lowest under the positive profiles, the mixed profile lies between. And the difference is significant between pairs of the three profiles.Study 3 explored the effects of parental style on mobile phone dependence and their psychological mechanism among high school students by constructing structural equation model. The study found that parenting style had a direct effect on mobile phone dependence among high school students and an indirect effect mediated by self-esteem.Compared with mixed parenting style, negative parenting style was significantly negatively correlated with self-esteem,positive parenting style was significantly positively correlated with self-esteem;self-esteem had a negative predictive effect on mobile phone dependence of high school students.Self-esteem plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between parenting style and high school students’ mobile phone dependence.Based on a person-centered perspective,we systematically explored the relationship between parenting style and mobile phone dependence of high school students. We found that there are multiple profiles of parenting style, both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have confirmed that there are differences of three parenting profiles in the level and development changes among high school students’ mobile phone dependence.Self-esteem plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between parenting style and mobile phone dependence of high school students. This study has a certain theoretical value for enriching person-centered research, deepening the understanding of parenting style and its relationship with high school students’ mobile phone dependence, and expanding the research on the psychological mechanism of adolescents’ mobile phone dependence. This study can also provide some guidance and suggestions for parents’ education practice, prevent the emergence of adolescents’ mobile phone dependence, improve the condition of adolescents’ mobile phone dependence, and improve the mental health of adolescents. |
