| This is a translation practice report on Joseph Turow’s book Media Today: Mass Communication In A Converging World,and translation practice tasks are excerpted from the first two sections of chapter four in this book.Today,the new media industry,supported by Internet technology,has grown significantly.The traditional media have given rise to the trend of media convergence.The translation of this text aims to promote knowledge sharing and cultural exchange in the field of communication studies and media at home and abroad,as well as to help domestic readers understand how to cope with the impact of changes in media development.The source text is an informative social science text.On the one hand,it is characterized by using many specialized terms,using abstract nouns and using long and complex sentences.On the other hand,in order to accurately convey the social science information in the source text to the target readers,the translation must conform to the target readers’ reading habits and Chinese expression modes.Therefore,in the translation process,the difficulties of determining the meaning of words,analyzing and expressing long and difficult sentences,and the readability of the translation remain to be solved.The translation project was successfully completed under the guidance of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory through three stages: pre-translation,during-translation and post-translation.Based on the application characteristics of Adaptation Theory in translation practice,this report analyses typical translation examples in translation practice from two dimensions: contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability.The translation adapts bilaterally to both the source language and the translated language in three communicative contexts as well as two linguistic contexts,with the aim of understanding the deeper meaning of certain words,grasping the original author’s intention and at the same time accurately conveying the content of the source text.The main translation methods and techniques used include semantic extension,annotation,addition,omission,clarification of logical and referential relationships,etc.In addition,the translation dynamically adapts to the linguistic structure and expressions of both the source language and the translated language,with the aim of adapting to the reading habits and thinking modes of the target readers and improving the readability of the translated text.The translation methods and techniques used include lexical conversion,splitting,reinvention of sentence structures and transformation of the impersonal subject,etc.The analysis of the translation examples has led to the following findings in this translation report.Firstly,the purpose of translation is the starting point for all translation acts and indicates the general direction of translation.It is determined by the features of the source text,and at the same time it determines the translation requirements,translation difficulties and the guiding theory for translation.Second,the feasibility of Adaptation Theory in translating social science texts is clearly explained and expounded.Under the guidance of Adaptation Theory,the translated text can reproduce the meaning of the source text by using authentic expressions,so that readers to fully access the information.Finally,there are advantages and disadvantages to different translation methods and strategies.Translators should be flexible in choosing the appropriate methods and techniques based on different translation needs.In conclusion,despite the few shortcomings and limitations of this translation practice report,it can serve as a reference text for media-related translation and deepen the understanding of the application of Adaptation Theory to guide translation practice. |
