In the Austrian writer Zweig’s novels,descriptions of water are everywhere.From the perspective of imagery criticism and material imagination theory,the images of rainstorm,snow,fog and tears resulting from water composition or change described in the novel can all be attributed to water images.The use of these water images not only adds to the twists and turns and complexity of the content and plot of the novel,but also makes the artistic style of the works have a unique aesthetic characteristics.The metaphor and symbolism of water images also make Zweig’s novels more implicit and profound.At the same time,this introverted style of writing,together with his gentle temperament characteristics,lays a foundation for the water culture style of his novels,and fits with the traditional aesthetic concepts of the East.Once his novels were introduced,they were loved by many Chinese readers.The water imagery group in Zweig’s novels jointly creates a cultural environment good enough to highlight his personal creative characteristics.The analysis of the unique aesthetic value contained in this environment is conducive to understanding the writer’s creative characteristics from a new perspective.Therefore,this paper from the psychological analysis of imagery criticism and material imagination theory,combined with the writer shape water images of psychological factors and realistic factors,through the material reaction,cultural traceability,association and imagination,excavate water as images use more rich and deeper connotation,and strive to produce empathy with the author,analyze the multiple connotation of water images.The main body part of this paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly studies the presentation of water images in Zweig’s novels,and comprehensively grasps the prominent role of water images in his works from three aspects: water images in natural environment,water images in human world and the combination of water images and other images.Water in the natural environment establishes the overall tone of his narrative story,the water in the human world shapes the characters in his novels,and the water combined with other elements enriches the connotation of water,while highlighting the philosophical implication of the work.The second chapter mainly discusses the water images of the novel,from the writer personal life experience,cultural edification,the humanistic care of the writer frequently use water images,and the water images in the overall works,with its life changes to observe the change of the creative psychology.The writer endows the unique values to water,raising it from a basic element to a kind of imagery group.The third chapter mainly analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of water images in Zweig’s novels.With the three aesthetic characteristics of metaphor,tragedy and defamiliarization of water images,he is able to explore the extensive and profound social thinking reflected behind his works.
