A Report On The E-C Translation Of CGDs-carrier And Treatment Based On Reiss’s Text Type Theory

Medical translation,as a type of translation,plays a very important role in promoting the development of China’s medical level and the construction of medical services,and the author came into contact with medical translation when he first started his master study.At the same time,a friend around him suffered from a disease called chronic sarcoidosis,and after reviewing relevant materials,he found that many books on the relevant pathology came from abroad,and there were relatively few records and studies on this disease in China.Thus,the author became interested when he read the book CGDs-Carrier and Treatment.The text was compiled by the CGD Medical Society in the United Kingdom,where medical research on the disease is more mature than in China,in terms of prevention,medical treatment,and post-treatment facilities.In order to promote the in-depth research and exploration of this disease in China,the author decided to select CGDs-Carrier and Treatment as the source text for this translation practice,in order to improve translation ability and also want to enrich the medical understanding of this disease in China and provide reference text for pathologists in related fields.In terms of vocabulary,the book contains a large number of medical terms and specialized nouns,and there are many long and involved sentences in tense and syntax,as well as a large number of passive voice,which is a great challenge for the translator,both in the initial reading and translation process.At the same time,from the chapter perspective,the translation of a large number of long and involved sentences is also a test of the translator’s logical comprehension and appropriate expression.The book introduces the causative principle of chronic sarcoidosis from a genetic perspective,and explains in detail the treatment modalities and therapeutic environment of chronic sarcoidosis and other related strategies.It provides patients’ families with the appropriate scientific prevention and coping treatment modalities.Using the book(all three volumes)as the source text,this paper discusses the application of this theory to the translation process of medical texts,as well as the translation techniques and methods for this text,using German functionalist Katharina Reiss’ s Text Type Theory as a guide.In her theory,Reiss points out that there are three types of texts: informative,expressive and operative.According to the purpose and nature of the text,informative text requires direct and complete communication of the content of the source text;expressive text requires the artistic form of conveying the concept of the content of the source text;and operative text requires recreating the form of the text to directly achieve the desired reflection,with the focus on “content”,“form” and “effect” respectively.If the source text is intended to be reflected by the recipient,the processing of the translated text must accommodate the formal norms and stylistic conventions of the target language,and the primary goal is to achieve the desired effect.Through careful analysis of the characteristics of the text and its functions,the author concludes that the text belongs to the informative type.Reiss puts forward two translation standards for informative texts: first,to faithfully convey the content of the source language,i.e.,the translation should present the complete information in a language form familiar to the reader;second,to adhere to the target reader-oriented,and the language form of the translation should be oriented to the target language.Combining the requirements of the text to convey facts,information and knowledge,as well as the characteristics of accuracy,completeness,logic and fluency of the informative text,the translator has carried out the following treatments in the translation process: firstly,to divide the sentences of long and involved sentences,and to delete and add translations to some contents in order to directly convey effective information;secondly,to ensure the accurate expression of medical-specific terms and terminology;thirdly,while expressing the meaning of the source text accurately and fluently,the fluency and logic of the language should be also taken into account.Through the exploration of theory-guided translation practice,the author finds that Reiss’ s Text Type Theory has very important guiding significance for the translation practice of medical texts,and expects that this paper can provide reference significance for the translation of medical texts and researchers in related fields.
