| Sport Concussion is a type of brain injury caused by an external impact or jolt to the head during sports activities.This injury is frequently observed,especially in full-contact and high-speed sports,and can have various adverse effects on the individual if not promptly treated.Therefore,immediate screening and management of sport concussion are essential elements of sports training,athletic competition,and even physical education.Currently,The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5th Edition is one of the widely used assessment tool internationally,which offers the benefits of standardization and comparability,enabling evaluation across different medical institutions and different countries.However,there is no corresponding Chinese version of Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5th Edition,let alone relevant studies in China.Consequently,it is necessary to translate it into Chinese to enhance its popularity and dissemination in China.By doing so,a convenient and practical tool for sport concussion assessment will be provided to medical personnel,coaches,athletes,physical education teachers,and other relevant individuals.Guided by Gideon Toury’s theory of translation norms,This translation program translated The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5th Edition(SCAT5): Background and rationale,Canadian Guideline on Concussion in Sport,Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5th Edition(SCAT5),Concussion Recognition Tool 5th Edition(CRT5)and The Child Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5th Edition(Child SCAT5)into Chinese and then created the The Chinese Guideline on Sport Concussion Assessment Tool be editing the translation.Translation norms theory considers translation as an activity governed by norms.The translation of a text needs to ensure fidelity to accurately convey knowledge,while also considering reader expectations and reception.In translation,initial norm influences the translator’s overall choice between “adequacy” and “acceptability”;preliminary norm affects the choice of the source text;and operational norm influence the translator’s choice of different translation methods during translation process.Through the translation practice,it was discovered that the application of the three translation norms of preliminary norm,initial norm,and operational norm can effectively improve the translation quality.Firstly,the direct translation from the source language to the target language is a specific manifestation of the preliminary norm influencing text selection,which can reduce the interference of the intermediary language and ensure the accurate understanding of the meaning of the source text.Secondly,the initial norm guides translator to prefer adequate or acceptable translations,and in the process of translating SCAT 5,translator adopts the strategies such as explanatory translation of abbreviations,literal translation with supplementation of proprietary names,and nativization of foreign words,striving to achieve a balance between adequacy and acceptability in translation.At the operational level,the operational norm guides the translator to use expansion or reduction methods,restructure sentence content,select and process some words,change the voice,and transform and process the text at both macro and micro levels,so as to better convey meaning.The innovations of this translation practice include the first complete translation of the SCAT 5 and the first comprehensive and complete background and guidelines;the shortcomings are that the validity of the compiled Chinese Guideline on Sport Concussion Assessment Tool has not been tested,and the text-based analysis of example sentence may not fully illustrate how the norms are applied in the translation process,both of which should be further discussed and improved in subsequent studies. |
