| The revised National English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools(the2017 edition revised in 2020)proposed that English subject teaching aims to cultivate and develop students’ English core competence, which is composed of linguistic competence, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability. In the process of acquiring English learning,English writing can better reflect their comprehensive ability and English core competence than English reading and English listening. However, there are numerous deficiencies in the cultivation of English core competence in high school English writing teaching at this time.Nowadays, the college entrance examination has been reformed, with the English writing section accounting for a larger proportion than before, focusing on students’ comprehensive ability, which definitely put forward more detailed requirements regarding students’ English writing ability. The authors gathered data for this study primarily using survey questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews, and analyzed the questionnaire data using SPSS,performed post-coding statistical analysis of classroom observation data, and conduct content analysis of interview data. This study focuses on addressing three questions:(1)What are the status of high school English teachers’ perceptions of developing students’ English core competence in writing teaching?(2)What strategies do high school English teachers commonly adopt to develop students’ core competence in English writing teaching?(3)What are the main difficulties that high school English teachers encounter in developing students’ core competence in English writing teaching? The author chose 75 teachers and 288 students from three different high schools in Loyang City to collect data through questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews to answer the three questions.According to the questionnaires, most English teachers are unfamiliar with the English core competence. In terms of linguistic competence, teachers primarily teach language knowledge while rarely improving students’ language expressive ability, linguistic consciousness and linguistic intuition.Teachers focus on students’ writing interests when it comes to learning ability, but they rarely provide students with opportunity to expand their English learning channels. When it comes to thinking quality,English teachers focus on enhancing students’ logical thinking while ignoring critical thinking and inventive thinking training. In terms of cultural awareness,English teachers tend to concentrate on the transmission of cultural knowledge but rarely on the development of students’ intercultural communication skills.Subject-oriented,group collaborative learning, and group cooperative evaluation are the strategies used by high school English teachers when cultivating students’ core competence in English writing teaching, according to classroom observations.Through interviews, the main difficulties in developing students’ core competence in writing teaching were revealed.First,it’s difficult to build the students’ writing interest;second, the teachers do not know how to develop students’ thinking qualities and cultural awareness;and third, the teachers do not have enough time and energy to develop students’ core competence in English writing teaching. Finally, based on the above questions, this study provides a number of appropriate suggestions to facilitate high school English teachers in developing students’ core competence in writing teaching. |
