With the development of the economy and the change of consumption concept in the past ten years, driven by multiple factors such as the increasing number of pets and owners year by year and the diversification of pet consumption, the pet industry in China has entered a stage of rapid development, the market scale is constantly expanding, and higher requirements are also put forward for the domestic pet breeding and medical level.Deafness in Dogs and Cats is a book published by the Center for Agricultural and Biological Sciences International(CABI).The author is George Strain, professor of comparative biomedical sciences at Louisiana State University and an expert in cat and dog deafness and veterinary neuroelectrical diagnostic techniques. The translator chooses Chapter Three and Chapter Four of the book as the source text for this translation task. The source text is informative. The translator takes Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical guidance, and semantic translation as the supplementary theory to ensure the accuracy and readability of the translation. Moreover, the translator hopes to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the source text.Given the difficulties encountered in the translation process, the translator analyzes them from lexical, syntactical, and textual levels respectively. The translator adopts different translation methods to solve the difficulties, such as rearrangement of sentence order, conversion, reference, ellipsis, connection, repetition, and so on,to achieve fluency and accuracy of the translation and make it conform to the expression habits of the target readers. This translation practice enables the translator to acquire much knowledge about animal deafness, improve her translation ability and in the meantime obtain a better grasp of Newmark’s translation theory. It is hoped that this report will provide useful reference for research related to deafness in dogs and cats.
