An Experiment Report On The Application Of Omission Strategy In Chinese-to-English Consecutive Interpreting

Omission strategy is an interpreting strategy that focuses on omitting redundant information to ease the burdens of the interpreter and helps him better distribute his energy on indispensable information.Consecutive interpreting is usually applied in press conferences,public speeches,and interviews.Coordinating listening,note-taking,shortterm memory,and speech delivery in a highly intense environment with limited reaction time is a challenging task.According to Gile’s Effort Models,the interpreter only has limited energy;thus,it is even more challenging to spare extra energy to use omission strategy in the interpreting process.Omission strategy is a necessary interpreting strategy for graduate students majoring in interpreting to grasp,and whether it can be used deliberately is a question that needs to be explored.In this experiment report,the author used excerpts of the Statement at the General Debate of the 77 th Session of the United Nations General Assembly,delivered by Wang Yi,State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China,as his experiment material.He selected graduate English interpreting majors of the Class of2021 from the College of Foreign Studies,a university in Liaoning province,as his experiment participants.Through more objective,direct,and convincing experiment data,the experiment approves that one could deliberately use omission strategy in Chinese-toEnglish consecutive interpreting.The author also designed a questionnaire to investigate participants’ basic understanding of omission strategy in consecutive interpreting,personal practice behavior,and experiment performance.By analyzing the questionnaire,the author discovers a particular pattern that could inspire the interpreter to be a skillful user of omission strategy.The experiment’s result and conclusion aim to provide a new perspective for interpreting learners to view the application of omission strategy in consecutive interpreting and a new pattern to improve their practice behavior.
