In August 1886,four Beiyang naval warships, including Dingyuan and Zhenyuan, made their first overseas visit to Japan and were incorporated into the Nagasaki dock of Japan for repair. On August 13 and 15,the Chinese sailors who landed had an armed fight with the local patrol and people in Nagasaki. There were casualties on both sides. This event ended with the Japan paying thousands of yuan more to China. This matter is commonly known as the "Nagasaki incident".As a long lasting and influential diplomatic news event in East Asia, the "Nagasaki incident" was widely reported by Chinese and foreign media. This article takes the game between Chinese and Japanese newspapers in the "Nagasaki Incident" as the starting point, examines the reporting presentation of SHUNPAO in the three periods before, during, and after the "Nagasaki Incident",sorts out its reporting topics, and analyzes the reporting characteristics and news concepts of the newspapers. The Japanese press’ s coverage of the "Nagasaki Incident" reflects the Japanese society’s contempt and fear towards China. In this context, the report on by SHUNPAO is a response to the Japanese press’ s views on China, reflecting the views of SHUNPAO on Japan before the Sino Japanese War.This article,in addition to the introduction and conclusion,is divided into the following five chapters for discussion:The first chapter briefly introduces the reporting background of "Nagasaki Incident".This chapter consists of two sections. The first section introduces the historical background of the Nagasaki incident from three aspects:the naval strength of China and Japan,Sino-Japanese relations and the situation in East Asia. The second section understands the basic situation of SHUNPAO during the "Nagasaki Incident" from three aspects:layout, speech features and main writers, newspaper distribution and readers. The second chapter mainly analyzes the reports about the navies of China and Japan and the relations between China and Japan during the period from the Prince’s review of the navy to the time before the "Nagasaki incident".SHUNPAO made detailed reports on the Prince of China’s naval review of the schedule, review ceremony, for the Chinese navy inherent bad habits put forward a lot of suggestions, and always pay attention to the relevant dynamics of the Japanese navy. The third chapter focuses in detail on the report of SHUNPAO when the Nagasaki Incident occurred.First of all,SHUNPAO actively defended China’s interests, denounced Japanese patrols with a clear attitude, refuted newspapers with different positions, and reviewed the old grievances between China and Japan.Secondly,SHUNPAO continued to report the dynamics of the parties during the Sino-Japanese joint trial, emphasizing the negative impact of the incident on the business people in Nagasaki, advocating a joint trial in accordance with the law and a quick settlement of disputes. Finally,as a foreign newspaper founded by a British businessman,SHUNPAO actively defended the interests of the UK in the Korean Peninsula. At the critical moment when the Sino-Japanese negotiations were on the verge of collapse and military tensions were rising,it downplayed the initial idea of quick resolution, put more emphasis on peaceful settlement, and called for joint Japanese defense against Russia. The "Nagasaki incident" was eventually handled well with German reconciliation. The fourth chapter mainly examines the report of SHUNPAO after the settlement of the "Nagasaki incident".SHUNPAO dedicated its memorial service to the Chinese soldiers killed during the visit to Japan, showing the humanistic care of the media, and actively appealed for national self-improvement after the incident was resolved, advocating the establishment of the Chinese navy, and continued to pay attention to the trend of the Japanese navy. The fifth chapter provides an insight and comparison between the Japanese press’ s views on China during the "Nagasaki Incident" period and the Japanese views of SHUNPAO from the perspective of news reporting. The "Nagasaki Incident" was a major diplomatic event that occurred in Sino Japanese relations before the Sino Japanese War of 1894-1895.During this period,Japanese public opinion showed both psychological contempt and military fear towards the concept of China, and both contempt and fear towards China coexisted. On this basis,SHUNPAO responded to the Japanese press’ s view on China. The report on the "Nagasaki Incident" by SHUNPAO deeply reflects the blind and arrogant view of the Japanese people who despise Japan and China will win,the hostile view of the Japanese people who are hostile to Japan and defend North Korea, and the compromise and mediocre view of the Japanese people who rely on external forces and prioritize peace.Placing the two together for comparison highlights the value and significance of the report on the "Nagasaki Incident" in SHUNPAO.In a word, limited to the historical background of the Westernization Movement, the understanding of Japan in SHUNPAO only stayed at the level of the number of military ships and whether the navy was strong or not.At that time, the external concept of Chinese public opinion and the understanding of Japan were synchronized with the whole process of China’s modernization. The traditional concept of China as a great power is obvious in SHUNPAO which is blindly optimistic about China’s comprehensive strength and lacks a clear and accurate understanding of the changes of the external environment. As a "watchtower" of the society,it is dereliction of duty.Of course, the Qing government’s defeat in the Sino-Japanese War eight years later could not simply be attributed to the negligence of the media. In addition,we should also pay attention to the active exploration of SHUNPAO in the field of international communication.SHUNPAO actively arranges foreign correspondents and is willing to use such important physical media infrastructure as telegraphy and ships in the international news and information transmission. The application of telegraph technology has significantly improved the efficiency of news. However,SHUNPAO also recognized that the Chinese media had been in a passive position in international communication due to the lack of control of postal rights in the late Qing Dynasty. In any case, during the "Nagasaki incident" period,SHUNPAO strongly appealed and advocated that China and Japan should abandon past grievances, peacefully and properly handle the Nagasaki incident, and actively guide public opinion. From this point of view,SHUNPAO did not become an booster of the war,but stuck to the moral integrity of the newspaper, which is still enlightening to the media one hundred years later.
