Abstract/Summary:
The Korean drama "Squid Game" is a dystopian thriller and suspense drama, and it is also one of the classic texts of the international dissemination of Korean film and television dramas."Squid Game" constructs real society as a surreal "game space" through different spatial narrative methods such as material space, social space, and spiritual space.Different narrative space methods have different functions and meanings, and they jointly construct the unique film and television narrative system of the play.According to the theories of narratology, space and power,"Squid Game" is used as the analysis text, and the case study method and text analysis method are used to systematically sort out its multiple spatial narrative methods, and then explore the power mechanism contained in it.The combination and nesting of material space, social space and spiritual space jointly constructs the film and television narrative framework of the play, extending the connotation and meaning of film and television texts.Among them, the material space is the real space for the survival and life of the characters in the film and television drama, and it is also the basic structure of the film and television narrative of the play. Many material spaces are arranged and combined in a time sequence, forming a concise and clear story line that balances the complexity of the narrative;Social space is a spatial form formed based on material space, and its function points to the complex social relations and class differences between people. The social space realizes the representation of the class identity of game managers and game participants, and is also a window for us to observe class struggle, which includes both the struggle between game participants and game managers, and the class struggle within game participants; The spiritual space presents the distinctive characters and characters of the game participants, who are "marginal people" in society who have been in an oppressed situation for a long time, and "selfishness" is their common psychological characteristic.Diverse spatial narratives form the core of the film and television narrative of "Squid Game",and different narrative spaces are the basis for the operation of the power mechanism, and at the same time, they are also the "epitome" of Korean real society. The "game space" is a specific field for the implementation of power, and the capital side represented by the game manager indirectly realizes the control and discipline of the game participants by controlling the "game space".In addition, the scene design, decorations, colors, props, etc.inside the "game space" are aimed at controlling and disciplined the game participants. In particular, the electronic monitoring system in the "game space" is an important power mechanism,it constitutes a kind of hidden "peeping" for game participants.Korean film and television works represented by "Squid Game" usually use space for metaphors and representations. The space in film and television dramas is not only a physical building or living space, but also a symbol of class, identity and power. The living space representing the upper class is often a palatial architectural style, while the living space representing the people at the bottom is a dilapidated scene. The occupation and competition of all social strata for living space is actually the desire for power and status represented through living space. This also triggered the audience’s reflection on many issues such as space and class, space and power.
