| Energy poverty has been recognized as a global challenge and an important indicator of poverty in developing countries.This translation material Energy Poverty:(Dis)Assembling Europe’s Infrastructural Divide,authored by Stefan Bouzarovski,is an academic monograph on energy vulnerability and urban transition,giving insight into the internal and external drivers of energy poverty in Europe and recommending policy countermeasures.The scholarly composition also contributes to its value as a source for academic translation study.This translation practice,therefore,may serve as an example of academic text translation research and a driving force,though minor,for the introduction and localization of knowledge in the realm of energy poverty.Given that Energy Poverty is an informative text characterized by complicated linguistic features,the translation work is accomplished and examined under an analytical framework of Information Structure Theory.The idea of information structure,proposed by Halliday and developed by Lambrecht,views language exchange as a process of information flow,dismantling utterance from a perspective of information structure.This information-based philosophy allows the translator to take the translation process as the transmission of information rather than,as traditionally conceived,contextual meaning or aesthetic function.In practice,several methods,including cutting information structure,combining information structure,transposition of information focus,conversion of logic,and amplification of information are developed based on the information structure approach and proved workable and helpful in solving problems caused by linguistic disparities between English and Chinese.Despite limitations such as the feasibility of information structure-based methods for atypical informative text translation,this study may provide some reference for informative text translation and research afterward. |
