A Report On The E-C Translation Of British Folk Tales And Legends Under The Guidance Of Eco-Translatology

Literature is a priceless spiritual and cultural asset of humanity,and literary translation is a significant means of cross-cultural exchange.The translation materials used in this translation project are from chapters 5–10 of Catherine Marie Briggs’ British Folk Tales and Legends.The translator discovers that the text is full of linguistic and cultural references,which is important to preserve the balance between the ecology(It mainly refers to the interaction between translation subjects and their external environment)of the source text and that of the target text.As a result,the translator completed the translation using the “three-dimensional transformation” from Hu Gengshen’s Eco-translatology.Eleven specific translation techniques are used in the dimensions of language,culture,and communication: conversion of word classes,conversion of sentence structure,omission,the pursuit of literariness in the target-text,annotation of cultural background,transformation of figuration,transformation of onomatopoeia words,abstraction and specification,reproduction of tone,semantic amplification and contextualization.In order to successfully transplant the original text into the target language ecosystem,the translator should take into account the expectations of the target text readers,and therefore,the translator has done her utmost to preserve the spirit of the SL ecology under the premise of focusing on the target language ecology.This report aims to offer some references for other translators working on the same kind of material to promote more diverse literary aesthetics among readers.
