| 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand.Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in economic, cultural, political and other fields have continued to deepen. The signing of RCEP has led to a rapid increase in cultural exchanges between the two countries.Translating information about New Zealand into China is conducive to cultural exchange and dissemination between the two countries, deepening Chinese readers’ understanding of New Zealand, and providing reference materials for research on New Zealand.Chapters 1-3 the book NEW ZEALAND: The Making of An Asia-Pacific Society respectively narrate the development history of New Zealand’s land and people, economy, state and politics. Therefore, the translator chose this part as the content of translation practice. This thesis is a report on the E-C translation practice. The report comprises four parts.First,it introduces the background of the translation task, the features of the source text and the structure of the report. Then, the translation process is described, including preparation, implementation of the translation, and translation quality control.Next is the most important part of the report, that is,the case analysis, which summarizes the translation problems met in the translation and corresponding solutions under the guidance of Christine Nord’s theory of “Funtion plus Loyalty”.The translation problems are uncertainty about the translation of loanwords;indetermination of the meaning of proper nouns in various fields, lack of cohesion and coherence in translating the serial short sentences;and logical ambiguity in the translation of punctuation marks. And the corresponding solutions are transliteration, paraphrasing and reference to parallel texts;amplification and annotation;intergration according to the semantic relation;and addition and adjustment. At last, the findings and inspirations got from the translation are summarized. |
