A Comparative Study Of Instant Messaging And Video Conferencing Software In Online International Chinese Language Education

Abstract/Summary:
The epidemic has prompted the rapid development of online international Chinese language education,and convenient and effective communication technologies and live streaming platforms have facilitated the smooth development of online international Chinese language education teaching.Among them,instant messaging software and video conferencing software play an increasingly important role in online international Chinese language education teaching because of their ease of use,rich functions,and wide audience.This study takes instant messaging software and videoconferencing software as the main research objects,and investigates the similarities,differences,and advantages and disadvantages of the two types of software applied in online international Chinese teaching.Among instant messaging software,We Chat relies on its powerful social function and is generally used as an auxiliary tool for real-time learning sessions before and after classes;QQ and Skype can be used in online international Chinese live classes because of their live video streaming function,and can also be used for teaching management and feedback and evaluation before and after classes.Video conferencing software Zoom,Tencent Conference and ClassIn are generally used as online live teaching platforms,providing diverse forms of live broadcasting for international Chinese teaching.Based on the practical experience of teaching international Chinese to Chinese children online,this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these two types of software in the whole teaching and learning process of international Chinese from three aspects: teaching process and learning mode,teacher-student interaction style,and post-class feedback evaluation and supervision,respectively.In terms of teaching and learning styles,video conferencing software is rich in teaching and learning tools,convenient for teachers to use,and improves students’ interest in independent learning;instant messaging software realizes one-on-one personalized tutoring and flexible learning styles.In terms of teacher-student interaction,videoconferencing software has a rich form of classroom interaction and high student participation,but it is difficult to communicate and interact after class,involving complex issues such as user rights,privacy and time difference;instant messaging software has extended teacher-student interaction in time,but there are problems of unstable network and imperfect basic functions.In terms of teaching supervision and feedback and evaluation methods,both instant messaging software and video conferencing software do not have supervision functions,and teachers can only rely on software tools,verbal instructions,and game videos to engage students and reduce their bad behaviors.The feedback and evaluation of video conferencing software is throughout the classroom teaching session,and the feedback and evaluation after the class is done with the help of instant messaging software,which provides multiple evaluation of the whole teaching session from the technical aspect and realizes the timeliness of teaching feedback and evaluation.After comparing and analyzing the teaching similarities,differences,advantages and disadvantages of instant messaging software and video conferencing software,combining the software functional advantages,questionnaires and interviews,ClassIn and Skype are selected for the online international Chinese comprehensive class teaching design,integrating the software functions into the teaching sessions and showing different teaching processes.The two kinds of software have their own shortcomings,such as the imperfect after-class evaluation of ClassIn,the difficulty in Skype classroom practice and the lack of teaching resources.There are also common problems in online teaching,namely poor teaching supervision.To solve these problems,teachers need to improve the use level of media technology,and improve the quality of online international Chinese language education teaching by enriching classroom management methods,adopting multi-dimensional and diversified evaluation methods,building and using a library of high-quality teaching resources,and designing diversified classroom exercises.Thus,online international Chinese language teaching implemented by software such as ClassIn and Skype,as an extension and supplement of the traditional classroom,cannot completely replace the traditional offline classroom teaching.While teachers and students actively use instant messaging software and video conferencing software to teach international Chinese language education,they should pay more attention to the combined development of online and offline teaching and learning.After the epidemic is over,online international Chinese language teaching will still be an indispensable part of international Chinese language education,and the update and improvement of instant messaging software and video conferencing software will also bring more intelligent and digital international Chinese language teaching.The integration of online and offline teaching and mutual collaboration may become an important development direction for international Chinese education in the future.
