On The Translation Of The Nominalization In Markets Of Tomorrow:Pathways To A New Economy

The difference between Chinese and Western thinking determines that Chinese emphasizes parataxis and uses more verb clauses,while English emphasizes hypotaxis and uses more nouns and prepositions.As a result,English texts,especially economic texts,have a large number of nominalizations.Therefore,it is of great significance to accurately translate nominalizations in economic texts.This translation project is selected from a report Markets of Tomorrow: Pathways to a New Economy at the World Economic Forum in October 2020,which belongs to economic texts and has a large number of nominalizations.However,translating nominalizations in economic texts may be difficult due to the disparities in English and Chinese expression styles.Therefore,the author will apply the foreignizing translation strategy to explore the translation method of the nominalization in the source text,to convey the information more accurately and objectively.This paper takes the nominalization in the economic text as the research object,analyzes the characteristics of nominalization in economic texts,and discusses the translation methods of nominalizations from three levels: lexis,phrase and syntax.This study proposes translation strategies for several sorts of nominalizations,such as literal translation,part-of-speech conversion,conversion,amplification and split translation,based on foreignizing translation strategy and translation practice.Combined with translation practice and the comparative analysis of English-Chinese nominalization structures,literal translation and part-of-speech conversion deal with the lexical nominalization translation,literal translation method and conversion deal with the phrasal nominalization translation,and amplification and split translation deal with syntactic nominalization translation.By using these translation methods,the translation can be made closer to the target language’s expression habits,convey the information of the source text accurately and objectively,and facilitate the readers’ understanding and acceptance.Through this translation practice report,the author discovered that under the guidance of foreignizing translation strategy,the author can apply translation methods flexibly,ensuring that the translation is both faithful to the source text and conforms to Chinese expression norms.Moreover,the author has obtained a better understanding of nominalizations and a better comprehension of the linguistic qualities of economic texts,and hopes to provide some guidance for future economic and trade translations in theory and practice.
