Research On The Semantic Category Words Of "Beautiful" In Shuowen Jiezi

Xu Shen’s Shuowenjiezi in the Eastern Han Dynasty is the foundation work of Chinese philology,which contains all kinds of contents and rich vocabulary resources,and it is an important source for us to study Chinese vocabulary.Many achievements have been made in the study of Shuowenjiezi.In recent decades,it has become a new point of view to study some words in Shuowenjiezi.“Beautiful” as a common sense concept,its related vocabulary in the Shuowenjiezi recorded.However,there are few achievements in the study of “Beautiful”meaning word in Shuowenjiezi.Therefore,we carry on the special glossary research to“ Beautiful” meaning word in Shuowenjiezi.Based on the explanation of Shuowenjiezi and the definitions of the important dictionaries,we hold that 50 words in Shuowenjiezi are the “Beautiful”words,and these 50 words are aggregated into the “Beautiful” semantic field.According to the specific meaning of the word “Beautiful”,the semantic field of “Beautiful” can be divided into three parts: the semantic Field of sense organ,the semantic field of evaluation and the semantic field of expectation.This paper studies the meaning of “Beautiful” in Shuowenjiezi from three aspects:meaning,syntactic function and the behavior and waste of words.From the point of view of word meaning,members in the same semantic field also produce different extended meanings in the process of evolution.From the perspective of syntactic function,the meaning of“Beautiful” can be used as many syntactic elements in the explanation,and the most frequently used attribute is used to explain,modify and limit the nature and state of people or things,in Shuowenjiezi,there are also “Beautiful” sememes as subject and object.From the perspective of line waste,25 of the 50 “Beautiful” words have died out.The dying words have two forms: The dying of the form and the dying of the meaning.Some of the still-in-use“Beautiful” words are limited in context,and can only be used in written language or in the evolution of word meaning expansion.The evolution of the meaning of “Beautiful” indicates that,influenced by the internal factors of language and the development of society,the evolution of the meaning of “Beautiful” is dominated by the expansion of its meaning.
