Chengdu Science City is a Business English text aiming at attracting foreign investments by introducing the local environment,policies,and enterprises.This report explores the translation from Chinese to English of the source text under the guidance of translation principles of Business English.The report analyzes the features of the source text at the lexical,syntactic,and rhetorical levels.Firstly,introducing science and technology enterprises,local policies,and business environment,the source text involves a large number of organization names,technological terms,and social science terms that cover various fields.Secondly,the source text includes many run-on sentences containing a large amount of information.And the loose logic between clauses makes the hierarchical structure and the focus unclear.Finally,in the policy introduction section,the source text uses explanatory and tautological expressions forming implicit repetitions.Business English includes various types of texts such as advertisements,official documents,contracts,and enterprise promotions.Previous studies on Business English translation have proposed multiple translation principles.Based on the features of the source text,this report summarizes three principles to guide this translation practice,namely accuracy,faithfulness,and prominence.The principle of accuracy requires translating the various professional vocabulary in the Business English text accurately.The principle of faithfulness requires being faithful to the original information rather than the form and conveying the original information completely.The principle of prominence requires concise and clear information while fully conveying the original information,allowing the target reader to obtain key information with minimal effort.Under the guidance of the principle of accuracy,organization names are translated by complying with the supreme sources’ versions,while technological terms are translated based on their disciplinary backgrounds to achieve professional accuracy.Under the guidance of the principle of faithfulness,social science terms are translated by literally translating familiar vehicles,paraphrasing unfamiliar vehicles,and paraphrasing strong connotations,so as to be faithful to the original information.Under the guidance of the principle of prominence,run-on sentences are translated by revealing the logic among clauses and converting to vertical lists.Implicit repetitions are translated by omitting unspecific expressions and combining tautologies to achieve conciseness and highlight key information.Based on the analysis of the source text features,this report conducts a case study under three translation principles: accuracy,faithfulness,and prominence.The report summarizes several translation methods applicable to Business English texts,aiming to provide valuable insights and references for similar translation tasks. |
