Translation Practice Report-A Case Study On E-C Translation Of Unido’s Ensuring Industrial Safety And Security Handbook

This translation practice report is based on the English to Chinese translation project of the Ensuring Industrial Safety and Security HANDBOOK of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO),in which the author participated during her internship.The source text introduces the basic concepts and specific measures of ensuring safety and security.The Ensuring Industrial Safety and Security HANDBOOK has a strict and formal language style with long and complex sentences.Characterized as an informative text with truthfulness,logic and scientific nature,the text also gives suggestions and thus has certain appealing properties.In view of its complex textual features,different translation strategies need to be flexibly adopted for the specific contents of each chapter.Currently there are few translations and studies of texts related to the field of industrial safety,so the practice of this project and the writing of the thesis have certain reference significance.This translation practice report contains four chapters: Chapter 1 describes the translation project,introducing its background and significance,and then analyzes the content and feature of the original material;Chapter 2 describes the process of the translation project,describing the work of pre-translation,translation and post-translation;Chapter 3 analyzes the translation case,presenting the translation difficulties and strategies of the handbook from three levels: at the lexical level,the translation difficulties focus on abbreviations,technical terms,modal verbs and nominalizations;at the syntactic level,passive sentences and long sentences are discussed,the former mainly translated by methods such as passive to active,using unassertive and judgmental sentences,or retaining passive,while the latter dealt with splitting,recasting and amplification;at the discourse level,graphic translation and structural articulation are mainly analyzed,with the former using concise and accurate language while the latter ensuring smooth logic and fluent reading;Chapter 4 summarizes the translation practice and the research findings,and reflects on the shortcomings and the direction of efforts.
