Nanyang Han Painting Museum, one of China’s first national-level museums, requires innovative display design theories to guide its renovation,as its current display methods are outdated and do not meet the needs of the public. While the theory of flow psychology has been widely applied in various fields in China,it is lacking in the field of display design. This paper aims to explore the convergence of flow theory and display design theory by using the exhibition renovation of Nanyang Han Painting Museum as a starting point to enhance the visitors’ experience and the efficiency of conveying exhibit information. This paper first investigates the Nanyang Han Painting Museum and Han painting stones, and summarizes the three characteristics of its main exhibits: excellence, artifact, and spirituality,in order to support subsequent exhibition construction and internal structure.Secondly, the deductive method is used to relate the theory of flow psychology to the exhibition theory of art museums.Through questionnaire surveys, behavioral observations, and interviews, the feasibility and effectiveness of flow theory in exhibition design are demonstrated, and the influencing factors that can trigger visitors’ flow experience in exhibition space are summarized.Based on the deductive conclusion and research results, this paper summarizes the exhibition design strategies that trigger visitors’ flow experience, which are divided into narrative factors, scene factors, and feedback factors. The narrative factors include spatial sequence and expressiveness, the scene factors include spatial field and immersion, and the three characteristics of excellence, artifact, and spirituality of Han painting stones are integrated into the spatial organization. Finally, based on this strategy,a more specific and targeted exhibition renovation practice is carried out for the Nanyang Han Painting Museum. The flow factor design strategy proposed in this paper provides new ideas and methods with practical significance for the expansion of the exhibition design theory for art museums,as well as for the renovation and update in practice.
