The cartoonists of the 1930 s kept abreast of the times and at the same time attached great importance to the national and popular expression of local art, incorporating both Chinese and Western elements into their cartoon practice and forming their own distinctive artistic styles.Taking the 1930 s as the main subject of this study, this article examines the visual presentation, creation The author then discusses the positive impact of cartoons on the artistic ecology of Shanghai under the impact of modern Western civilization and artistic trends.Firstly, the author compares the development of Shanghai cartoons in the 1930 s,when the city was experiencing a boom, and summarises the development of Shanghai cartoons from the perspective of Shanghai culture into two trends: firstly, the pursuit of fashion and fad in commercial art,and secondly, the consciousness of nationalism and traditional culture at the time of the collision between East and West and the national crisis. On the basis of the analysis of the background of the times, the author classifies the flourishing cartoon publishing business in Shanghai at that time, especially the representative pictorial magazines, according to their thematic bias, and takes "Times Cartoons",which expressed the urban and social life of the times, and "Cartoon Life",which expressed the criticism of current affairs and news documentary,as typical examples for analysis and study.Next, using the image analysis method, the cartoons of Zhang Guangyu,Feng Zikai,Hu Kao and Zhang Leping are used as examples to explore how the cartoonists of the 1930 s implemented the dual orientation of fashion and traditional vocabulary in their artistic language. Finally, the perspective is shifted from a retrospective look at the 1930 s to the current trend of "national trend" and the wave of national comics, which shows that comics have always been in a constant search for advancement in both ontology and boundary crossing.Whether in the 1930 s or in the present, comics as a popular art form, the incorporation of tradition and the display of the pulse of the times have always been two inseparable aspects of comics, and they are like twisted ropes that together contribute to the development of the local comics industry and promote the cultural prosperity of society in a parallel manner.
