A Report On Dialogue Interpreting For A Coking Project

Dialogue interpreting is a demanding and challenging type of interpreting,which generates a high cognitive load in the process.According to Gile’s Effort Models,interpreting requires great capabilities of interpreters who need to allocate their efforts properly under high cognitive load to improve their interpreting performance.From March to June 2022,during her internship in a coking project in Shanxi Province,the author served as a dialogue interpreter for technical conferences,on which this report is based.The thesis describes how the interpreting was prepared,proceeded,and reviewed under the guidance of the Effort Models.It is found that in the process of interpreting,the interpreter was faced with a host of problems,such as the fast speaking speed of the speakers,their strong accents,high information density,the author’s lack of extra-linguistic knowledge,and imbalance between note-taking and short-term memory,and that the Effort Models provided the theoretical guarantee for the interpreter to address these challenges and apply the coping tactics on the spot,thus improving the quality of interpreting.Interpreting practice is crucial to interpreters if they are to improve their professional abilities,but post-interpreting review and reflection are even more critical.It is hoped that this study may verify the theoretical significance and practical value of the Effort Models in interpreting practice,providing a reference for learners and novice practitioners of interpreting.
