With the rapid development of economic globalization, the translation of academic literature on economics and policy is becoming more and more important. This report selects the translation of the article“Why Developed Economies Adopt the Loose Monetary Policy”(《发达经济体为什么采取宽松货币政策》)written by Chinese economist Zhang Bin and published in the journal Economic Perspective in 2020.Based on the comparative study of the source text and its English translation, the present author focuses on analyzing by what means the functional equivalence can be achieved more effectively in the process of translating the academic literature on economics and policy into English.Guided by the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida, this report,by illustrating with specific examples, analyzes the text type and linguistic characteristics of the selected material and discusses the difficulties encountered in the translation process from lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic levels.Through the analysis,it can be concluded that translating terminologies accurately can achieve equivalence at the lexical level;paying attention to the linguistic differences between Chinese and English as well as reorganizing short Chinese sentences into an English one or a long English one can ensure equivalence at the syntactic level;understanding the implied logical relationships among sentences in the source text and adding logical connectors to the target text can realize equivalence at the textual level;using the proper words to reproduce both the intention and the style of the source text can achieve the equivalence at the stylistic level. All these could contribute to the general equivalence between the source text and the target text of this kind.
