In the contemporary era, cultural exchanges among countries around the world are accelerating, and literary works are one of the important ways of cultural communication. Therefore,in the background of globalization, the translation of literary works still plays an important role. This is a translation report based on the translation practice of The Custom of the Country(Excerpt)written by American writer Edith Wharton. The translator participated in the translation project of The Custom of the Country, and independently finished the translation from Chapter Six to Chapter Eleven(about 18,187 words). Then, she discussed the translation version with the project supervisor,in order to provide some references for the final version of the novel. The novel was finished in 1913,telling the story of Undine Spragg,an American girl who changes her marriage and tries to move up the ladder of status and wealth in New York.Translating the novel was of difficulty and challenge, for its great literariness, delicate description, and unique style. The translator encountered difficulties in translating abstract nouns, idioms, metaphors, and long and difficult sentences. The report reviews the whole translation process, describes the translation difficulties and analyzes the translation methods and skills used to solve the difficulties under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory. In the process of translation, the translator strived for a close and natural translation as well as functional equivalence.Through the translation practice, the translator’s understanding of literary translation has been deepened.Especially for novel translation, the translator realized that translators should make the target language as close as possible to the original style, restore the plot of the source text, and reproduce the characteristics of different characters,so as to better immerse readers in the plot of a novel. In addition, the translator’s literary knowledge and translation competence have also been improved. The translator hopes that the report may serve as an inspiration for the translation and research of similar texts in the future.
