Optional-narrator theory is one of the frontier topics in narrative theory. This paper takes the "optional-narrator theory",which has recently attracted much attention in the western academia,as the object of study, and starts from the debate between the pan-narrator theory and the optional-narrator theory. In this study,we will discuss the origins, development, and propositions of the optional-narrator theory in the context of narrative poetics and its use in narrative interpretation. This paper is divided into five sections: in the introduction section introduces the object of this paper: the optional-narrator theory, and to sort out the background and conditions of its formation, highlight the frontier of the theory and fill the gaps of domestic research.Chapter 1 focuses on what constitutes a "optional-narrator".Section 1 begins with the concept of the narrator, identifies two completely different meanings in the historical development: one is the concept of narrator first introduced by Anna Laetitia Barbauld in the theory of the novel, referring to the first-person personal narrator distinct from the author,is the original concept of the narrator;another is the definition of the pan-narrator theory in narratology,a narrative function that is necessarily present in fictional text.Section 2 on the basis of these two conceptual distinctions, the original concept of the narrator is used to define the optional narrator in a historical perspective.Chapter 2 discusses the optional-narrator theory in the view of the poetic theory of narration. This chapter is divided into three sections and a commentary, section 1 sorts out the non-communicative theory of narrative and the narratorless theory of narrative in linguistic perspective, point out that narrative is not always about communication;section 2composes the views of the optional-narrator theory in literary narrative perspective,in terms of rhetorical fiction theory and the instituational theory of fiction,at the same time, pointing out the challenges and debates caused by this theory;Section 3 composes the issue of narrator from the transmedia narrative perspective, contrasting the different narrator theories mainly by two forms: film and comics, and demonstrates the superiority of the optional-narrator theory in the development of transmedia narrative.Chapter 3 reviews the optional-narrator theory in terms of historicity and rhetorical effects in conjunction with relevant textual analyses, adds the necessary premises of the theory, and points out the current weaknesses of the theory. The conclusion section summarizes the opinions of this paper, and looks forward to the further development of the optional-narrator theory.
