The Influence Of Sence Of Awe On Moral Judgment

Not only is moral judgment an evaluative process,it also affects our behavior choices and contributes to the maintenance of social order.Emotion has influence on moral judgment.As a positive emotion,the research on the influence of awe on moral judgment is still in its infancy.Scholars believe that awe includes trait awe and state awe(awe emotion).Moral judgment mainly focuses on general moral events and moral dilemmas.At present,the direct relationship between awe and moral judgment only involves general moral events,and the influence of awe on moral judgment under moral dilemma has not been explored.In order to solve the limitations of the traditional moral dilemma paradigm,Gawronski et al.(2017a)proposed the CNI model of moral judgment by using polynomial modeling.The model independently quantifies the individual ’s sensitivity to results(C parameter),sensitivity to ethical norms(N parameter)and general action / inaction preference(I parameter),and more clearly reveals how individuals affect these three parameters in the process of moral judgment.The CNI model of moral judgment is an advanced paradigm in the study of moral judgment.Based on the advanced CNI model of moral judgment,this study examined the influence of awe on moral judgment and its mechanism through three studies.Study 1 used a questionnaire survey to explore the influence of trait awe on moral judgment.The results showed that individuals with high trait awe were more sensitive to moral norms(N parameter)and more inclined to make moral judgments,while individuals with low trait awe were more inclined to make utilitarian moral judgments.There was no significant difference in sensitivity to results(C parameter)and general action /inaction response preference(I parameter)between high and low trait awe groups.On the basis of Study 1,Study 2 used the experimental method to induce the individual’s instant awe through video,and explored the influence of state awe on moral judgment.The results showed that the awe group was more sensitive to moral norms(N parameter),more inclined to make moral judgments,and more inclined to make inaction(I parameter);the neutral control group was more inclined to make utilitarian moral judgments and preferred to respond to actions.There was no significant difference in the sensitivity(C parameter)of the results between the two groups.Study 3 used the experimental method to further explore the mechanism of the influence of state awe on moral judgment,and explored the mediating role of psychological distance and empathy in the relationship between state awe and moral judgment.The results showed that the mediating effect of psychological distance on the influence of state awe on moral judgment is not significant;empathy plays a partial mediating role in the influence of state awe on moral judgment,that is,the subjects in the awe group have have a higher level of empathy and sensitivity to moral norms.(N parameter),and are more inclined to make deontic moral judgment.The subjects in the neutral control group have a lower empathy level and are more inclined to make utilitarian moral judgment.There was no significant difference between the two groups in the sensitivity of the results(C parameter)and the general action / inaction response preference(I parameter).Conclusion:(1)Trait awe affects individual sensitivity to moral norms(N parameter).Compared with the low trait awe group,the high trait awe group is more sensitive to moral norms and tends to make moral judgments.(2)Stateful awe significantly affects individuals ’ moral norm sensitivity(N parameter)and general action / inaction response preference(I parameter).The awe group was more sensitive to moral norms,more inclined to make moral judgments,and more inclined to make inactive behavior choices.(3)Psychological distance does not play a mediating role in the influence of state awe on moral judgment.Empathy plays a partial mediating role in the influence of state awe on moral judgment.
